Demos Renew
Bid for TV,
Radio Time
WASHINGTON, March 1 an -
Turned down on their first request,
the Democrats fixed fresh argu-
ments at the radio and TV net-
works today that they should have
free equal time to reply to Presi-
dent Eisenhower's speech of last
night.
Party Chairman Paul Butler
telegraphed heads of the networks
saying "in the name of lair play,
I call upon you again to reconsider
your hasty decision" against
granting the tree time.
He suggested that if he didn't
get it, Congress— which/ the Dem-
ocrats control--might want to
Change a few laws. He said:
"If the networks persist in the
position that the Democratic party
can expect fair treatment only
when there is a law to compel
fair treatment. I feel confident
that the Congress will want to ex-
plore this problem fully and take
whatever ateps the Congress
deems necessary to assure fair
treatment to both major political
parties.”
The Democratic chairman ar-
gued that Eisenhower's specch
was political. This appeared to be
a reply to the stand by Robert W.
Sarnoff, president of NBC, that
the address was carried “as a
news event of unusual national
importance.”

House Okays
Power Dams
WASHINGTON, March 1 -
The House today passed a bill
which would authorize a 760-mil-
lion-dollar series of power dams,
reservoirs and irrigation systems
to the Upper Colorado River
Basin.
The action paved the way for
a House - Senate conference to
work out the details of a final
draft of the bill.
The Senate last year approved |
its own version calling for project
authorizations totalling 1% billion
dollars
One of the major differences be-
tween the two bills is the omis-.
sion in the House’s version of the.
controversial Echo Park Dam in
Colorado, it was left out as a
concession to conservation groups
protesting that the dam would
flood a portion of the Dinosaur
National Monument
The project, designed to develop
water and power resources of
Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and
Wyoming, has been endorsed by
President Eisenhower
