CLASS OF ’66 MAKING BIG PLANS - Members of the Mercedes High School Class of 1966 are making
plans to attend the multi-class reunion on Friday, September 28 at Best Western’s Palm Aire on FM
1015. The next day, September 29, starting at 3 p.m., the class will take part in celebrating the
Mercedes Centennial at the Livestock Showgrounds, and they’ll follow that with a class social get-
together Among those planning the events for the class are, in front above, from left, Nita (Vega)
Rodriguez, Alice (Wisner) Flores, Hilaria (Valdez) Hinojosa, Esmeralda (Ramos) de la Garza, Anna
(Fernandez) Adame and Dora (Rodriguez) Flores. Standing in same order are Tommy Terry, Larry
Onderdonk Eddie Howell, Arturo Garza and Rene Peynado. Those wanting to attend Friday s

Summer Tennis Camp nearing
Lupe Cantu, a former Mercedes
High School tennis standout, now a
teaching pro at Giamalva Tennis Acad-
emy in Houston, will once again be
hosting a Summer Tennis Camp for
local students.
Students entering junior high
through those who will play in high
school are encouraged to take advan-
tage of the camp, which will run Au-
gust 13 -16.
Schedule and fees include: Begin-
ners, 8 a.m. to 9 am., $20; Intermedi-
ate, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. ($40); and Ad-
vanced, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ($40).

The Mercedes Housing Authority requests "Previously
Assisted Households" who are no longer in receipt of
Section 8 Program assistance through the jurisdiction
of the City of Mercedes to contact the Mercedes
Housing Authority at (956) 565-3139 Monday through
Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Only previous participants in receipt of Section 8
Program assistance that were terminated during the
period of April 2005 through July 2006 are required to
contact the main office.

The District offers Career Clusters for Career and Technology Programs in Agriculture, Food and
Natural Resources, Health Science, Business, Management & Administration, and Law, Public Safety,
Corrections & Security. Also offered are classes on Human Services and Architecture & Construction.
Admission to these programs is based on interest and aptitude, age appropriateness, and class space
available.

Catholic funeral mass was con-
ducted Monday for Guadalupe
Galvan, who died July 27 at the age of
85.
He was retired from a career as a
carpenter.
He is survived by his wife,
Manuela O. Galvan; and four sons,
Joaquin Galvan of San Antonio, and
Juan Galvan, Mauro Galvan and Gil-
bert Galvan all of Houston.
Also surviving are four daughters,
Manuela Alaniz of Corpus Christi,
Lupita and Lucy Galvan of Mercedes,
and Guadalupe R. Galvan of San An-
tonio.
Other survivors include four
brothers, Mike Galvan and Leonel
Galvan of Corpus Christi, Federico
Galvan of Austin and Rafael Galvan \
of Mercedes, and one sister, Olivia
Arizmendi of San Benito, as well as
five grandchildren and one great-
grandson.
A rosary was prayed Sunday at 7
p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
Funeral service was conducted
Monday morning at 10 a.m. in Our
Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Cre-
mation followed.
Funeral arrangements were under
the care of Garcia & Trevino Funeral
Home.
