I went Friday night with my wife.
We sat near the back of the cabaret’ room. This
was a main dining room of an old elegant hotel
called The Mansion. The opulence of its day was
not so well disguised. Nor was the service and ap-
pointments present now. .There were by my guess
more than one hundred people in attendance.
I had one of those moments when one’s name
is called, in this case in the form of a question...
are you (Y/T)? Yes, and I am sorry but I cannot
call your name ...
The lady was Ms. Anjelica Lopez, now Dr.
And gentle reader?
She talked of Mercedes, Texas. Of us, of her,
in a way never heard before, probably on any per-
formance stage anywhere.
If anyone can tell me when and where I would
like to know.
I wished right then and there that all those of
us who love the place called Mercedes, for what-
ever reasons, and they are many and complicated,
could have heard her speak and sing that night.
I watched the heads turn in the fairly sophisticat-
ed audience. I saw more than one ask the seat./table
mate.. .where? Where is that...? then the... ohhh..
Amanda, lived there? Mercedes?
Yes. Yes.
I thought as I watched her perform of the
things Amanda has lived through, endured., then
prevailed over.

MERCEDES: Jose Antonio
Saenz, Jr., 66, passed from this

family by his bedside. Born on
November 24, 1941, in Mer-

Elvira Saenz, Sr., he is preceded

City. Upon returning to his na-

School, have proven his dedi-

I remember Anjelica from the Tiger marching
band. I remember that her grade point average
was much higher than any of mine would ever be.
I remember, I think, that she was part of the group
under Mrs. Cowden’s wing that dared step on to a
stage and try to do something.
I was made to remember that she and Jean Ann
Attebeny were tight and still are in touch.
Jean Ann’s sister Layne was my science fair
partner (she took pity on me) and we won a big
cation to the city of Mercedes prize...sweepstakes?
Jose Saenz
Fourth Degree, Assembly of the
Knights of Columbus. He was
also a district deputy for the Mid
Valley Council, and an Assistant
Diocean Deputy in the Browns-
ville Diocese. Mr. Saenz was a
member of Our Lady of Mercy
Catholic Church, a devoted fa-
ther and grandfather as well as
loving husband to Rita Saenz,
his wife. Commander Saenz
served in the United States
Army for over twenty years,
which included tours in France,
and its people. Mr. Saenz has
been elected commander and
chief financial officer of the

Layne and Amanda were close.
Did I tear up? Damned right I did. A little...
If I were a talented writer I could make a book
about her that would rip your heart out.
From the bare minimum that I know, I sit and
marvel at the strength and tenacity and belief that
this unique human being has revealed to me.. .
It is coming it too high for this writer ever to
take on anything that sounds like the triumph of
the human spirit, but she comes the closest I may
ever be to anyone doing that.
If you doubt, get hold of some of her music
and listen. As you listen, listen for that young girl

She is Amanda now as she deserves to be called.
Amanda took the stage. The lights came up.
She sparkled. I was not totally shocked because
I had seen two of her performances previously ,
several years back.
Francis Sory.
Then we who were lucky got to know her,
even if only a little.
For those moments on that stage in that el-
egant hotel, Mercedes was wonderfully repre-
sented...
And to these sixty two old listening ears,
Amanda has never sounded so good.
