About twenty-live per cent of
the railways of this country arc I
now in the hands of receivers. To |
an unthinking mind this might in-
dicate an unprofitable business for
the investment. Such is not the
case. The trouble lies in the fact
that nearly all the railroads have
•‘watered stock" iu an equal sum to
ther real cost and valuation. Let
Uncle Sam make void all “watered
stocks" and regulate rates accord-
ingly and both the railroads and
people will be s better off.
BIG FIGURES.
Few people stop to think of the
amount of money invested in life
insurance.
During the month of November
alone policies amounting to nearly
<151100090 were paid by 34 compa
nies in this country and their re-
ceipts for the same time must have
been a great deal larger.
These companies have paid in
beneficiaries in round numbers
$1000000000. Nor does this cover
all th ■ business of of our life insur-
ance companies. The disburse-
ments of a good many small compa
idea are not included in these fig
ures. Millions arc paid out by
them annually. Then there are
the secret benevolent organiza-
rations with their life insurance
business amounting every year to
many millions more.
A great deal if not the most of
this money goes where it Is badly
needed -to widows and orphans in
straitened circumstances. This life
insurance business is certainly a
valuable institution. The country
could not do without it. -[St. Louis
Republic.
