BIMETLLISM IN ENGLAND.
Mr. Balfour the Conservative
leader of the House of Commons
convincingly answered the objec-
tions of bimetallism in his speech at
the meeting of the Bimetallic
League in London last Wednes-
day.
He refuted the statement that
bimetallism is impossible showing
from the experience of Latin na-
tions that the par of exchange of
gold and silver can be maintained
under all circumstances. He tore
to tatters the argument that gold
monometallism benefits Great Bri-
tain at the cost of other nations.
He showed that the boasted British
system is a thing of shreds and
patches—gold in England silver in
Hong Kong and the Straits Settle-
ment and a mongrel mixture of
both iu India. He insisted that the
interests of Great Britain as well as
of all nations demand a change. He
summed up the situation in the fol-
lowing strong language:
England’s present system does
not suffice even for her internal
commerce and at a time when we
depend upon foreign nations for our
very bread it is the height of folly
to attempt isolation iu regard to
the currency. I believe that the
common sense of nations will not
long tolerate the present condition
of affa’rs.
Mr. Balfour noted the growth of
bimetallic sentiment in England
but it is evident that this growth
will rapidly expand. The vigorous
advocacy of the cause by the “ri -
ing hope” of the Conservatives
backed by a league of business men
who have subscribed $2. r >looo and
promise to raise as much more for
a bimetallic campaign of educa-
tion will speedily result in a great
change of sentiment in Great Bri-
tain on the money question.—[St.
Louis Post Dispatch.

Texas Storm.
The coast country near San An-
tonio Texas had a great storm
there on the night of 21st destroy-
ing many houses and farms of their
crops. The following is a partial
report of the devastation:
At Rockport forty houses were
blown from their foundations and
the Catholc church St. Mary and
commercial hotels wrecked Ves-
sels in the bay dragged and three
came ashore. Force of wind drove
rain through roofs. Rev. Scarbor-
ough of the Methodist church was
internally injured.
Half a dozen boats were blown
ashore at Corpus Christi. Crops
utterly ruined along the Kerrville
branch of the Aransas Pass road.
The bridges on the Aransas Pass
near Yoakum and one at Kerrville
were washed away.
Traffic was suspended between
here and Kcrville but resumed to-
night.
Reports place rainfall at iroin
two to five inches. Low lands along
the (luadaloupe and San Antonio
Rivers are under water.

A True Hero
Is the individual who smiles with
apparent cheerfulness during an at-
tack of rheumatism. If such there
be we never met him nor her. An
agonized grin is the nearest/ap-
proach to cheerfulness of aspect we
ever beheld under such circumstan-
ces. But when Hostetter's stomach
Bitters has repelled—as it certainly
will—the earlier attacks of this
formidable disease the quondam
sufferer has good reason not alone
to smile but to give vent to hearty
guffaws interspersed with frequent
chuckles. To the removal of dys-
pepsia malarial and kidney com-
plaints constipation and disorder
of the liver the Bitters is especially
adapted. It renews failing strength
and appetite and counteracts the
infirmities of ;tge. When debili-
tating maladies are succeeded by
tardy convalescence with a danger
of relapse it accelerates a gain in
vigor and flesh and tends to re-es-
tablish health on a lasting basis.
Give it asuitable trial.

Anyone who has ever had an at.
tack of inflammatory rheumatism
will rejoice with Mr. J. A. Stumm
220 Boyle Heights Los Angeles
over his fortunate escape from a
siege of that distressing ailment.
Mr. Stumm is foreman of Merriams'
confectionery establishment. Some
months ago on leaving the heated
work room to run across the street
on an errand he was caught out in
the rain. The result was that when
ready to go home that night he was
unable to walk owing to inflamma-
tory rheumatism lie was taken
home and on arrival was placed in
front of a good fire and thoroughly
rubbed with Chamberlain’s Pain
Haim. During the evening and
night lie was repeatedly bathed
with this liniment and by morning
was relieved of all rheumatic pains.
He now takes especial pleasure in
praising Chamberlain’s Pain Bahn
and always keeps a bottle of it in
the house. For sale by Smith Drug
