Texas is shipping many car loads
of cattle to the north: We notice
long trains daily being transferred
here from the T. <fc P. to the Iron
Mountain.
Maj. W. L. Stout has returned
from his trip to Cairo. He met his
wife there and accompanied her to
Mt. Pleasant Illinois where she
will remain during the heated term.
Mrs. 0. D. Scott left last night
for Rutland Vermont to spend
several weeks. Col. O. D. Scott
has engaged table accommodations
at the Huckins House during her
absence. _ _
We had another fine shower yes-
terday afternoon. If these showers
keep up during the growing season
the farmers will raise so much corn
that they will be compelled to en-
large their bine.
The Texarkana brass band was
out yesterday making music and
scattering dodgers for the Wilton
barbecue today. The boys were
playing a good march and we heard
several say it was a splendid band.
Three hundred men left Key

had plenty of ammunition and guns

The papers of Shreveport Pine
Bluff and other towns in Texas and
Arkansas of the size of this place
take one or two columns to tell
about a base ball game. Our city
has no organized club and we are
threfore not in it on this score.
San Antonio Texas had three
suicides on the 11th. They were
all good people too but according
to the Bible tiny are playing the

The council on the West side have
passed an order which will make it
obligatory on the part of any one
who may wi. h to dig a trench ditch
or remove a shovel of dirt on any of
the streets to first get permission
of the council. This Is right and
proper and then the council should
give notice to citizens living on
these streets a chance to protest
or acquiesce even before they grant
such permission.

The Men Going There are None of
Your Delicate Gold-Fish but Ac-
climated Silversides.
They are rolling into Memphis
Tennessee today as fast as steam
can carry them. This is what the
believers in white metal are doing.
Never in the history of an uprising
of a national question has there
been displayed so much zeal and in-
terest by the whole people as is
now displayed on the financial ques-
tion of this day. The associated
dispatches reports the day before
the convention thusly:
By a moderate stretch of imigra-
tion a visitor in Memphis tonight
might fancy himself in the national
capital on the eve of the assembling
of Congress or in the middle of a
national political convention. The
political element of the free silver
hosts has preceded the rural ele-
ment. Today's arrivals for the
great white metal conference have
been numerous and have included
many men of national reputation.
Senators Turpie of Indiana and
Harris of Tennessee who were the
first upon the scene have been fol-
lowed in close order by Sena-
tors Bate of Tennessee; Jones
and Berry of Arkansas;
George and Walthall Mississippi;
Gov. Evans and Senator Tillman of
South Carolina; while Senators
Marion Butler of North Carolina
and Pasco of Florida are on their
way together with other prominent
silver leaders including ex-Senator
Regan of Texas at the head of a
Texas delegation which with crowds
of Arkansas gathered en route fills
six coaches and number upward of
300. Ex-Congressman Bryan of
Nebraska will accompany the
Louisiana delegation of 200 on a
special train from New Orleans.
Ex-Congressman Sibley of Penn-
sylvania is expected to arrive to-
morrow morning as are also ex-
Governor Prince of New Mexico;
Senator Stewart of Nevada and
Alexander Del Mar the author of
several well-known coinage works.
Jasper in Trouble.
Jasper Hamilton postmaster ot
Eylau a small station six miles
from this place on the T. C. railroad
who has been holding down the job
since Harris»n was elected presi-
dent for the reason that the salary
was so small no one would have
the office except a negro and Jas-
per only held the office down for
the dignity that he thought went
with it. The affairs went straight
until one day Jasper used all the
postage stamps he had on hand in
a horse trade and before he could
make good the amount of the
stamps an inspector came along to
check him up and he found that the
postmaster was very short on post-
age stamps and still shorter on
money. He made his complaint be.
fore a United States Commissioner
and Jasper was “yanked up” and
had a hearing. He was placed
under a bond of S4OO to answer for
his crime. His trial will take place
at Jefferson Texas.
A mass meeting was called at
Dallas Texas by a follower of the
prevention of cruelty to animals for
the purpose of entering a protest
against the Corbett-1".':. .inimons
fight being pulled off there. The
vote on the Indignation icsolution
barely carried as the meeting was
attended by those who wished to
see the fight as well as those who
did not. A resolution or whereas
was passed which plainly said the
meeting was called for a certain
purpose by people who were not in
favor of having the fight pulled off
at Dallas and they asked the
friends of thuggery to please retire
as they were not invited or wanted.
Some thirty left the room and those
who were left “protested."
John N Harris a gold bug express-
man that runs between here and
Ft. Worth called ns in his car yes-
terdav and said: “I see you are
working for a free silver paper; and
1 want to make you an offer."
Here he pulled out a Mexican dollar
just from the moulds or at least it
looked s» and said: “Now 1 will
sell you as many of these as you
want for 5(1 cents each." Here the
reporter ran his hand down in his
pocket and fished up $3 and said
just give me six of them. Mr.
Ilarrlssald he only had one but he
could buy them in San Antonio for
49 cents a piece. This is the gold
bug argument. They can do these
things but when you get right
after them they are not (here. We
gave Harris an order for a half
bushel and when he brings them
around we will take them “'if" we
have American eagles in sufficient
quantities to pay for them
