A Gun Weighing 157500 Pounds.
One of the largest guns ever sent
west reached Chicago early Sunday
morning on the way from Washing-
ton to San Francisco. In traus-
porting it across the continent a
specially designed truck is used
similar to that which brought the
Kiupp gun to the world's fair.
There are only two of these trucks
in the United States and|both VF'ie
made to order for the Pennsylvania
Railroad company for the express
purpose of moving these heavy can-
non. It is one of the four monsters
designed for a part of the arma-
ment of the United States cruiser
Oregon. Us fellows will follow it
across the continent as soon as the I !
necessary tests are completed at 1
the Indian Head proving grounds. |
It is considered likely that all the l
guns for the new cruiser will be
completed and placed in posit on on
its gun-deck be’ore show Hies. The
piece that is now on its wav as is
each of the others also Is a thlr-
teen-inch rilled gun. it is a breech-
loader Is forty feet in length and
weighs 1575(10 pounds. It carries!
a projectile which weighs 1100 1
pounds and requires a charge of 550
pounds of powder and which as in
asserted will do execution at a dis- ;
tance of thirteen imlcs. This mon-
ster was made at the gun factory
at Washington. All the guns for I
the Oregon were finished eighteen
in >nths ago but nearly a year has :
been consumed in fitting the neces-
sary mechanism for the tests and
in subjecting the guns to the usual
trials. As soon as the gun now on
its way to the Oregon readies San
Francisco Hie truck will be hurried
back to Washington for another '
cargo of the same kind. No time
is to be lost if the guns are to be
placed in position before winter ar-
rives. -[Chicago Tribune.

Hoyt'* "A Trip to Chinatown.”
Next Saturday evening at the
Opera House will be one of merri
went when Hoyt's “A Trip to Chi-
natown" will be presented. The
skit designed by Mr Hoyt as a mu-
sical t rille is considered the most
breezy of bls many works. This
piece enjoyed a wonderful run in
New York having played (here for
over “(KI consecutive nights at
Hoyt's Theatre. Charles lloyt has
never set himself upas an instruct-
or a reformer or an oracle of the.
stage. His satires have conveyed
however a deal ol practical lessons
and he has created a school of act-
ing that has for a decade been the
most popular of all stage amuse-
ments. He takes for the founda-
tion of his various skits a foible or ;
fad of society and satirizes the
same In an original manner.
