Announcement is made that W.
B. Worthen of Little Rock has
bought Caruth's stock in the Ark-
ansas Gazette and now owns a con-
trolling interest in said paper.
A glove contest is billed for Pine
Bluff on December 26. If Governor
Clarke is desirous ot showing any
consistency it might be well for
him to call out the militia. —Hot
Springs Sentinel.
Arkansas’ state treasury now
contains over $300000 in good law-
ful money which is lying idle in the
vaults at Little Rock. By all means
a law should be enacted to loan out
this money so as to keep it in cir-
culation bring in revenue to the
state and remove all temptation of
officials to misuse it in any way.
The Empire state express on the
New York Central railroad now
holds the record as the fastest reg-
ular passenger train in the world
with a regular scheduled speed of
53.33 miles per hour to her credit.
The best speed of the trains of for-
eign nations is: England 51.75;
Germany 51.25; France 49.88; Bel;
gium 45.04; Holland 44.93; Itally
42.34; Austria-Hungary 41.75.
Temperance and morality is con-
stantly gaining ground. A late
dispatch from Indianapolis Ind.
says: “The liquor dealers have be-
come alarmed over the inroads
made by the prohibitionists in Indi-
ana. Reports from all over the
state show that 500 saloons have
been closed as the result of the op-
eration of the new Nicholson law.
In 100 towns and villages practical
prohibition is now enforced. The
number of saloons in the large cit-
ies has not been materially reduc-
ed but in the country districts the
prohibition sentiment is very pro-
nounced.”
Arkansas furnishes a sequel to
Damou and Pythias of old—ne-
groes at that. Four negro men at
Pine Bluff were up for trial for hog
stealing. It was decided to let two
plead guily and the other two go
free; lots were cast to decide and
the two married ones lost. Here
is where true heroism was shown by
the two single ones. Rather than
take their liberty and be free men
and make the other men and their

Newspaper Change
Mr. J W. Adams sold his intesest
in the Little Rock Daily Press to
Mr. Harry Clark who succeeds him
as President of the Press Publish-
ing Company and editor-in-chief of
the Daily Press. The policy of the
paper will be the same as the
re-organization.
The tide of emigration to Arkan-
sas and Texas is heavier at this time
than it has been for years. The re-
porter was at the depot this morn-
ing and noticed t hat the Iron Moun-
tain road brought in two Louisville
& Nashville coaches bound for Tex-
as points. They were deprived of
these cars at this place and many
of them went to points on the Cot-
ton Belt and some over the Texas &
Pacific while others went out on the
Transcontinental. Texas alone will
add 100000 population this season
or all signs fail. This being the case
we ask ourself what are we doing
toward having some of thesr people
settle here? and the answer will be
nothing. We should try and settle
up Miller and Bowie counties with
some of these Georgians as we know
them to be good people.
We learn from good authority on
the Texas side that the antis have
had a well prepared letter written
to the Comptroller of Texas setting
forth the facts of the recent elec-
tion on the whisky question ex-
plaining the “sub division” defect
they find in the law which they
think will entitle them to li-
cense since the election has been
held. The letter carries with it an
appicatiou from Collector Jim Jones
for blanks to issue license upon.
The Comptroller is Webb Finley
. and he is a good lawyer and a close
friend of Attorney-General Crane.
They will look fully into the matter
ot law before they send these blanks
' and whatever they do in the premi-
ses will stick we are told or at least
the antis say it will.

The Christmas trading has set in
quite brisk. We noticed a great
crowd in at J S. Ragland's and also
at Willis & Bud's and they were
buying Christmas goods too. Oth-
j er merchants were perhaps doing as
well but the reporter tarried at
; these two places and knows that
they are selling a lot of toys.

yesterday from Stamps Arkansas.
IHe says he is engaged in building
houses and has been for the past
three months. He tells us the big
mill there belonging to a company
i composed of William Buchanan of
this city and others have over 600
men on their pay rolls and that
quite a little city is being built up
around the mill.
Rev. Mr. Godby of Rusk Texas
preached.au extraordinary good ser-
mon yesterday at the State Line
Methodist church. Mr. Godbey isa
young man in years but old in in-
tellect and if he takes after “wine”
which is said to improve by age he
will be an intellectual giant if he
fives out his three score and ten
! years. He has a good delivery and .
held the large congregation assem-
bled to hear him with all their at-
tention and interest. We hope to
hear him again during conference.
W. W. Abers and wife of Texas
gave a seance on Saturday night to
a class of our citizens who are “spir-
itually” inclined toward believing
that “mine fatner’s” ghost do some-
times stalk forth on the earth after
the breath has left the body. The
city editor has been invited to at-
tend the next one and he will if
not requested to do otherwise give
bis opinion of what he sees pertain-
ing to “raw bones and grinning
skulls.” He will say right now that
he does not believe in ‘spirits or gob-
lins damned” but like other people
he might be convinced that he is
not on to every thing or theory ad-
vanced and if he could converse
with and hold the hand of a real
dead ghost he would certainly know
it and his ideas wou'd undergo a
change. We are thankful for the
: invitation and will be present.
