Notwithstanding the strong ef-
forts oi the goldbugs to decry the
credit of this country there is a
big scramble in far-off Germany to
buy some of the bonds in the new
loan. The bankers of Berlin. Col-
ogne and Frankfort fell over each
other in their haste to have ashare
in it and the United States Embas-
sy was overwhelmed throughout
the week with inquiries as to the
precise terms of the loan proving
conclusively that American credit
is unimpaired in the money market
there.
A paragraph recently run through

event had not been witnessed since
the time of Christ. Hicks the

This shows how little newspaper
men know about one of the most
common occurrences and the blun-

about 30 months. Using astronom-

AFTER NATIONAL BANKS.
Rodger Q Mills makes a Telling
Speech in the United States
Senate.
Senator Mills of Texas made his
speech yesterday on finance. The I
senator has been a close friend ot
President Cleveland and Carlislel
and has gone out of his way manv
times to keep down his criticism on I
their peculiar views on finance
Yesterday he broke the “tx»nd"|
between himself and this pair of
financial seers and went for them
in a dignified way.
While his crlticismsof their policy
was temperate his sword of argu-
ment had enough iron in it to make
it cut deep into the thoughts of
those who listened to him.
Mr. Mills showed the contraction
and expansion of the circulation
made by the banks and said this
system was now to be prepetuated
by further issue of bonds. When- i
ever the verdict of the people had
been taken it had been in favor of'
the legal tender notes. The people
had always stood against bonds and
bank circulation.
“Let any party" said Mr. Mills
“dare to go before the country in
coming contest with a plain de-
claration favoring a bonded debt
and bank circulation and when the
campaign is over that party will
need the services ot a first-class
undertaker.”
THEY ARE TALKING.
We hear a good many of our
citizens advocating making this city
one of the first-class. Should the
council so declare it will give
them power to pass ordinances
compelling property holders to put
down side walks of regulation
height and of the same material
also to grade streets build crossings
and make improvements generally.
The taxes will be no more than
they are now as the law says that
citizens of town or cities shall not
be taxed over five mills tor city
purposes and the limit has already
been reached.
Let the council not hesitate in
this matter but vote the ordinance
declaring this city one entitling It
to legislate under laws governing
cities of this class by a unanimity
that will not be doubted.

Pennsylvania Gubernatorial Party.
Today on the 12:40 Iron Moun-
tain cannon ball a Gubernatorial
party from Pennsylvania arrived
in the city en route to Texas
points
The party had been recuperating
at Hot Springs for a short time it
consisted of Governor Hastings and
wife Attorney-General Henry Mc-
Cormick Col. Spangler and wife
Dr. McGowan and wife.
Col. Henry Moore of this city a
cousin of Attorney-General McCor-
mick had received a telegram that
the party would pass through here
and he with a number of our busi-
ness men met the distinguished
gentlemen at the depot and invit-
ed them to remain over awhile and
view our live growing city.
Gov. Hastings and Mr. McCor-
mick are fine looking and most ge
nial gentlemen. They expressed
their thanks for the honor paid
them in the genial reception; re-
gretted that circumstances pre-
vented their remaining over to
meet with more of our people and
view the city. They left on their
special Pullman sleeper at 1:05 for
San Antonio and Laredo.
Among those at the depot to
meet the party were: Mr. and Mrs.

PAUL »S. THE GLOBE-TRQTIEiI.
No relation to Our Paul Jones the
Lawyer and Orator.
Paul Jones who came here a|
stranger in a strange land with
nothing but his photograph and
high top hat and gentlemanly ap-
pearance'to recommend him to pub-i
lie notice negotiated with one of |
the papers here to do his advertis-1
ing as also the Texas public school
to bouse him and help him to get
an audience. The Texarkana band
was engaged to make the music'
and after a week's advertising the
lecture came off and the door re-1
ceipts were so small that Mr. Paul
Jones the “globe-trotter" found it |
would take this sum to get him to |
his stopping place Jefferson. When
the newspaper man found that
Paul had not made a “divvy" he
became mad and swore out a war-
rant for “embezzlement ’ and went
after him. He. found him in Jeffer-
son and brought him back in hand-
cuffs and placed him in jail. He
was brought out yesterday for trial
and the newspaper man did not
show up to prosecute him hence he
| was set free.
I He left for Jefferson to fill his en-
igagement there under the auspices
ot the W. C. T. U. He also has a
similar engagement at Marshall
Texas.
Mr. Jones while in this city call-
ed on us and wanted to enter into
negotiations with us to advertise
him but we have been in the news-
paper business too long to pick up
a stranger on a business proposi-
tion and laud him so highly. Care
should be taken and a few inquiries
about such travelling men.

“Going into a decline." How of-
ten do we hear this expression.
What doesit mean? It means that
people are losing flesh growing
thin wasting.
The way to correct this condition
is to improve the digestion. The
condition arises from a disability to
eat and digest food. In fact food
does more harm than good because
it ferments and pu trifles in the
stomach developing poisonous sub
stances which when absorbed cause
various disorders.
What is required is that the stom-
ach be made to perform its duties.
The Shaker Digestive Cordial is a
food already digested and a digest-
er of toods as well it will make
the stomach healthy. Get a book

it.

Human Arm Kneading.
Where the kneading of dough is
performed by hand it is impossible
even under the most favorable cir-
cumstances to prevent the exuding
of the sweat of the brow and more
particularly of the powerful arms
that are dived up to the armpits
into the billows of flour and water
which they are to knead. Added
to this is the puffing and blowing of
all kinds of breath charged with
tobacco drink or the germs of an
impaired health or merely the in-
firmity of sneezing during the pass-
ing indisposition called a bad cold.
And what a concourse of bacilli
bacteria and their aunts and cous-
ins must be congregated there with
open jaws ready to seize upon their
victims. For the consolation of
those bakers who are still obliged to
resort to this means of kneading
dough be it stated that there are
many people who do not mind it all.
A lady scrupulously clean in every-
thing else expressed the conviction
that all of the above named flavor-
ings disappeared in the heat to
which the bread was exposed in the
process of baking. Faith is half
the cure and such customers are
quite likely to live long enough to
see out the last pair of human arm
kneaders. There must of course be
exceptions to prove a rule and the
rule is that the more the public
sees and bears of the manual pro-
cess of making bread the more
they shrink from eating it and the
more they patronize those bakeries
where machininery is used and
bread is made almost untouched by
hand.
