Lieutenant-General Drum-Major
McKinley has stepped out of the
Governor's office in Ohio and he can
now have time to work his little
boomlet tor the presidential place
be so longs for.
General Sherman as chairman of
the committee on foreign affairs
will report favorably on belligeren-
cy for Cuba after they havecapt
ured Havana and won by their owu
indomitable pluck. This is a great
country with a little “g" and “c."
The Senate is now enjoying the
heariug of speeches and bills intro-
duced by members who must stand
for a re-election this tall. It is pain-
ful to read their speeches and reso-
lutions and think of the woe they
must be in while working their jaw
for a return.
The birthday of Robert Burns is
to be celebrated in many places in
this country although he belonged
to Scotland by birth. But all lands
and climes lay claim to him as a
sweet singer. He was born Janu-
ary 25th 1759. It is hard to asso-
ciate him with any kind of weather
but balmy springtime after read-
ing his poems.
The increase of divorces in the
United States has caused grave
apprehensions and the different
states have been legislating on the
evil if evil it can be called. South
Carolina by an amendment its
constitution declares that no divorce
can be granted in that State for
any cause. Neither will the courts
recognize the granting of divorces
from any other State. Divorced
people had better give South Caro-
lina a wide berth if they re-marry.

Our presidential election will not
be the only great political contest
on this continent in 1896. Canada
whose territory reaches to the
north pole and would perhaps reach
beyond if there was and way to
reach that far will elect a parlia-
ment or House of Lords. The pre-
sent parliament has a life of live
years and it will be dissolved on the
28th of April. The Liberals who are
out of power hope to win by oppos-
ing the Government on the Manito
ba school question and on the tariff.
The conservatives who are now in
jpower are making the people many
promises. The fight will be a hard
one.

Masters Hal and Frank Turner
gave their little frieuds a “tacky
party” last night at their father's
house on Pine street. It was un- i
derstoon when the invitations were
issued that it was to be a tacky
I party i. e. it would l>e expected
i that the little ones would dress in
fantastic garments of odd fitting
shapes and old fashions.
The reader can imagine then how
the little folks looked togged out
in mama's old 1860 “togs ’ or pa-
pa's coat and pants.
There were some fifty present
and all of them would have made a
dog bark to have seen them pass.
Mayor Turner and wife and Miss-
es Annie and Maitel d'.d all in their
power to see that the youngsters
had a gay time and they succeed-
ed most admirab'y.
A luncheon was spread at the
proper hour and the little folks did
ample justice to it.
