Twenty-three negroes living near
the Cotton Belt railroad In Jeffer-
son county Ark. left last week for
the land of their .ancestors tn
Africa and more want to go. They
think an easy fortune awaits them
there. We wish all of them would
go—or that they could be- colonized
somewhere else.
While the whole land has been
plastered over with trusts and
monopolies there has always been
one source to which the plundered
and oppressed citizen could turn ft r
comfort. But alas even the con-
solations of religion seem now to
have become a prey to the monopo-
list. if we are to believe the report
concerning the formation of a Bi-
ble trust. We had hoped that the
monopolists would keep their hands
off the plan of salvation. —[Ex.
Within a week past we had a
'number of suggestions as to what
we should not publish. One of our
friends doesn’t fancy anything in
the funny line while another thinks
that is just the thing and wants
more of it. Another suggests there
are too many personals while
several others think we have failed
in our duty by not noting the move-
ment of themselves and friends
when they have been careful not to
let us know anything about them;
and so on and so on. They all for-
get that everybody does not eat the
same food or take the same
medicine or that every young man
does not fall in love with the same
girl. The trouble is we have about
six or seven hundred subscribers to
supply and possibly no two are just
alike. —Hope Gazette.
Men are just like hogs however
distasteful this may sound to the
hogs Wnen a hog gets an ear of
corn every other hog will trot along
behind him and squeal and whine
and toady for a bite; but just let
the front hog get in a tight with
his head fast in a crack and every
son of a sow will jump on hitn and
tear him to pieces. Just so with
men. As long as a man is prosper-
ous and has money he can J t keep
friends off with a base ball bat. The
moinenthe is unfortunate and his
wealth is gone he is not only snub-
bed by his former alleged friends
but they at one j begin to do him
all the harm possible. When a man
starts up grade the world falls in
behind and pushes. When he starts
down grade the world steps to one
side and greases the track.
David B. Culberson congressman
from our neighboring (Texas) dis-
trict says he will a be candidate
again for re-election. David is about
the only man over there that
handles the Democrats split up as
the)’ are on the silver and gold
question; and he can coquette with
enough of the Populists and Repub-
licans to get elected. It is like
throwing Democratic chances away
to nominate Dudley Sheppard
Hodges or others from that Dis-
trict save old David Culberson can
and has always carried Marion
county solidly and he always will
and there is not another man in the
district that can do this. We are
not a lover of Congressman Culber-
son by any means but we think
too much of the Democratic party
to let in any populist by nominating
any of the candidates mentioned
because we know they will be de-
feated at the polls
H. H. Holmes the gentleman

slaughter pens has run amuck and
he will have his neck tit ted to a nice

preme Court says he must hang and
hang he should.

WEST SIDE WHISKY STATUS
Wishing to give the people of
Texarkana the news and the true
sVatus as to the whisky question on
t’tie West side yesterday the editor
of this paper sought and received
information thereon from the pro-
per officials who have in charge the
execution of the law.
Meeting up with Judge Jno. L.
Sheppard who was en route to his
home at Pittsburg we asked him as
to the law in regard to license and
whisky selling on the West side. He
informed us that he had no juris-
diction as the matter now comes
under the control of the Bowie
County Court the Texarkana Dis-
trict Court having fallen through;
in that court he would have had
jutisdiction of that and other mat-
ters heretofore under the County
Court.
We then hunted up Judge Jno. J.
King to interview him on the ques-
tion of the law in regard to the
matter. He informed us that by
the decision of the Supreme court
in the recent Burnett county case
as to selling whisky in a sub-division
of a county he was of the opin-
ion that te late local option
election in a sub-division of Bowie
county was legal hence the issuing
of licene and sale of whisky in the
sub-division of which Texarkana
Texas is a part is right and lawful.
There is no longer any question in
regard to the matter on the West
side and it is clear that there will
be no prosecutions for the sale of
whiskey over there.
With Judge Sheppard we look at
the matter in an entirely different
light than does Judge King under
whose sole jurisdiction the ex-
ecution of the law comes. We think
the sub-division theory as a nullity
and farce. But is not for us to
construe the law for Judge King;
we can only leave the matter with
him his conscience and his con-
stituency.
MAYOR P. A. TURNER.
The above gennleman has con-
sented to again offer for the office
of Mayor which he has so success-
fully filled for the past two years
and we are satisfied that if he is
elected he will give our city a good
administration in the tuture. Mr.
Turner is an educated man in fact
he stands at the head ot the pro-
fession in law at the bar is a good
speaker fine reasoner and his char-
acter is unimpeachable. The peo-
ple of this city should rally to hi£
support and give him a majority
coramenserate with his talent and
standing. ‘ Let us not retrograde in
this matter but keep our city offices
in the hands of capable men like
Mayor Turner.
If the West side wants a good
man for Mayor Turner is that man.
We announce his name elsewhere
and hope to see him re-elected.

About ten davs ago the Southern
Lyceum Bureau of Louisville wrote
the Y. W. C. T. U. to know if we
could not have Max O’Roll to lecture
in Texarkana March 19. The Y s
decided to accept provided we
could secure the Opera House. Be-
fore wiring acceptanced called on
Mr. Harry Ehrlich to see if it was
engaged for that date and he
said it was not. I asked if we could
secure it for that night. He signi-
fied his willingness took down the
date and consented to post the
bills. The last thing I told him was
to consider it engaged. Immediately
wired acceptance and we proceeded
with preparations for the lecture.
Monday I sent the bills to Mr.
Joe Ehrlich te print Monday night
he sent me word from the theater
that he had printed the bibs and
sent them to our rooms but they
were |no account to us as we
could not have the Opera House.
Tuesday I called on him and he
confirmed the message sent. I at
once wired the bureau to cancel
the engagement. They replied
“impossible.” I have written to
and received several letters from
them since. They hold us to our
contract which is SIOO. The pastor
and stewards of the State Line M.
