Such a thing as disturbing a public

The bicyclist of our city had a

a hard rain falls on it and a few
days of sunshine afterwards allow-

ride wheels must look to other
places for riding and there is none
better than the streets on the

Major Stout who had a strange

in his eye and before we could say

met him yesterday and he exhibit-

as being a likeness of the city edi-
tor Pat Rowan and the Cosmopoli-
tan hotel. Mr. Rowan will tip the
scales at 300 the hotel— well we
will not guess at its weight but we
can say we make a “poor” showing
sandwitched between Pat and the
hotel. Major we hope you will de-
stroy this negative and take our
picture between two billard-cues
as we think we will loom up better.
I The dramatic recital given at the

Gladness Comes
With a better understanding of the
transient nature of the many phys-
ical ills which vanish before proper ef-
forts—gentle efforts—pleasant efforts—-
rightly directed. 1 here is comfort in
the knowledge that so many forms of
sickness are not me to any actual dis-
ease. hut -imply to a comtipatedcondi-
tion of the system which the pleasant
family laxative. S-. rnpof Figs prompt-
ly removes. That is why it is the only
remedy with millions of families and is
everywhere esteemed so highly by all
who value sfoou health. Its beneficial
effects are due to the fact that it is the
one remedy which promotes internal
cleanliness without debilitating the
organs on which it acts it is therefore

GOV. CULBERSON'S SPEECH.
According to previous announce-
ment. Gov. Chas. A. Culberson of
Texas addressed the people of Tex-
arkana on the political issues of
the day. Through the thoughtful
action of Chairman Hardin the
speaking took place in the Opera
House. It was filled to overflowing
quite a number of ladies among the
crowd.
We have not space to give any-
thing like a resume of Gov. Culber-
son's fine speech and will not at-
tempt it; it was both eloquent and
entertaining and elicited frequent
and hearty applause. Ater dwell-
ing at some length upon the nation-
al Democratic platform and dis-
cussing free silver coinage he ad-
dressed himself to state politics and
showed to every unprejudiced mind
that his administration had been all
that any reasonable man could ask;
showed from the record that Pop-
ulists had lied in charging upon it
extravagance—had saved over S6OO-
- in two year; state government
costs less now than part of the
time under Davis; taxes no higher
fhan the average for thirty years.
His exposue of those who defame
the good name of the state by try-
ing to fuss over money expended
to keep the brutal prize-fighters out
of her borders was grand noble
and patriotic.
Go v. Culberson though a young
man is talented able and eloquent.
In him we see more than “the son
of h s father”—for he well deserves
the high honors given him by the
people of the great state of Texas.
A MUCH ENJOYED AFFAIR.
About three hundred daintily
penned cards were issued by Mrs.
F. L. Wisdom for a reception on
Thursday last complimentary to
her sister Mrs. Aderhold of At-
lanta. Georgia. Between three and
six o’clock a steady stream of
smartly gowned women poured into
the beautifully decorated home.
They were met at the door by little
Mabel Lawson who received the
cards on a silvei tray. The guests
were ushered into the spacious
drawing rooms. and there received
by Mrs. Wisdom. Mrs. Aderhold
and their able supporters. Mes-
dames J. M. Carter Sam Smelser
Chas. Reeves Harry Taylor P. A.
Turner and Paul Jones. From
there they passed into the library
where a prettily wreathed nectar
bowl was presided over by Miss Annie
Turner and thence into the dining
room where refreshments were
served by Misses Netti Smith Irene
Alford Helen Surles Gertie Marx
and Mildred Moore 1 Again repair-
ing to the drawing room they bade
adieu to the hostess. The honored
Mrs. Aderhold wore a fetching
costume of mousseline de soie built
over ivory with silk.
