Hanna calls McKinley the Moses
ot America. Ab Hanna is doing all
he can to create a wilderness for
the President to grope through he
ought to know what kind of Moses
it takes to come out politically
alive.
Congressmen are anxious to con-
sider a public building bill which
will call for an appropriation of sev-
eral millions of dollars but Speaker
Reed refuses to allow it to come up.
For once Reed is right. While the
country is In the throes of a panic
is a time for retrenchment.
The goldbug socalled “Monetary
conference" is now in session at In-
dianapolis. As yet we have not
seen any of their plans for issuing
more bonds and further contract-
ing the money volume of the coun-
try; as soon as its hydra head is
shown we will take great pleasure
It taking a hit at It.
The other day the Senate rightly
snubbed Secretary ot State Olney.
In a treaty with two South Ameri-
can countries he asked that power
be given them to take by force per-
hoiis who escape to this country
charged with certain offences. It
would have been a bad precedent.
Senate acted wisely In refusing.
Arkansas has shown the railroads

by being unjust grasping and ava-

people of this state to show the oc-

IN OLDEN TIMES
People overlooked the Importance
of permanently beneficial effects
and were satisfied with transient ac-
tion; but now that it Is generally
known that Syrup of Figs will per-
manently overcome habitual consti-
pation well infoi med people will not
buy other laxatives which act fora
time but finally injure the system.
The Philadelphia Press says that
with 35000 locomotives in this
country there should be about
3500 built annually in order to
keep this branch of rolling stock In
good order. Last year only 1175
locomotives were built and the
year before only 1101. Like condi-
tions have qxlsted In car building
and track repairing for a year past.
Wither the railroads of the country
are going to be In very poor condi-
tion before long or a very large ex-
penditure must be made on rolling
stock ami maintenance of right of
way. _

MILLIONS ARE FAMISHED.
Statistics of the Stricken Population
of India.
London Jan. 12.—Lord George
Hamilton Secretary of State for
the Indian Department has sent to
the Lord Mayor the statement up-
on which the appeal for subscrip-
tions for the relief of the famine
sufferers in India was based. He
says that districts with a population
of 37000000 will be sufferers from
famine until the end of March and
that it may continue in some parts
until the end of June. In other
districts 44000000 inhabitants the
distress many deepend for a shorter
or longer period while 6000000 peo-
ple in the native states may be vic-
tims of famine. The density of the
famished population varies from
902 per square mile in Mozafferpore
and Bengal to 122 per square mile in
Bhalagat and the central provincesj
There were 1200000 persons on
the relief work at the begining of
January and this number will cer-
tainly reach 2000000 and may ex-
ceed 3000000 It Is estimated that
the famine will cost the Indian
Treasury £4000000 to £6000000.
Today's cablegram from Calcutta
says that the distress is rapidly
deepening especially in the Bundel-
pund districts where half the pop-
ulation needs relief.
The Mansion House relief fund
amounted to nearly £30000 tonight
Including a donation of £250 by the
Prince of Wales and the donation
by the Queen of £SOO which has al-
ready been chronicled.
Effort To Stop Train Robbery.
Chicago 111. Jan. 18.—Express
and railroad managers have sent to
messengers and train gurads a let-
ter which If the orders made are
carried into effect may cause train
robbers to hesitate before they de-
cide to hold up trains. These let-
ters Inst ruct the men to shoot to
kill In every case where robbery Is
clearly the intent of any one who
interferes with the running of
trains and a cash reward of 1500 Ib
held out for each robber shot but
not killed and SIOOO for a Jesse
James emulator who Is made to bite
the dust. The most Improved pat-
terns of repeating rilles am) riot
guns have taken the place of arms
of less deadly and rapid execution.
Oars are also being built with an
eye to more resistance. Floors and
sides arc reinforced with Iron plate
and the doors made heavier and
with stonger fastenings. The gang
that successfully holds up a train
during the present year must rink
considerably more than heretofore.
A newspaper In a neighboring
town once said: "The prettiest girl
In town doesn't carry hciself
straight enough when promenad-
ing." For a week after all the
young ladles In town stalked about
as straight as arrows and every
girl said: "That horrid old paper-
inn don't I walk straight?"
