CHEAP RAILS.
The question now is “Will the
cheap price on rails cause a revival
in railroad building in the South?"
We think it will if the slump in
prices is an honest one and will re-
main at the prices quoted 117 per
ton. The mills it seems are in the
hands of a few men and they have
practically sold but few rails in the
last half dozen years and if by drop-
ping the price to |l7 they could
stimulate railroad building and get
different lines started they could
gradually put up prices and in a
short time get back all losses if
they have sustained any by cheap-
ening their rails. We see that sev-
eral Texas railroads have been in
the market for rails. The Missouri
Kansas and Texas Railway company
heads the list with an order for 10-
000 tons of steel rails placed with
the Carnegie Steel company. This
means 100 miles of new track some-
where between here and Galveston
and steady employment fpr hun-
dreds of men for months to come.
The Frisco also availed itself of
the tempting opportunity afforded
by the prevailing low prices of rails
and placed an order with the Illi-
nois Steel company for 8000 tons.
The Missouri Pacific fell into line
with an order of 6000 tons and news
from Texas is that E. 11. R. Green
of the Texas Midland has just clos-
ed a deal for 20000 tons. There is
particular significance in Mr.
Green’s purchase as It means not
repairs but extensions. The great-
er part of the Texas Midland track
has been recently relaid so that if
Mr. Green's new rails are put down
anywhere they must go to extend-
ing his line.
The agents of both the Carnegie
and the Illinois companies are reti-
cent as to what orders they have
placed further than those above
noted but it is known that togeth-
er they have received orders for 30-
000 tons to be laid In the Immediate
vicinity of St. Louis.
A gentleman from a Texas prairie
city was looking at the rocks being
dumped on our crossings yesterday
and he asked the reporter where
the rock were shipped from and
when told that a bed of the kind he
was looking at was within ten min-
utes' walk from the city he ex-
pressed surprise that our streets
were not all graveled with It. He
said if his city had such a chance as
this tliey would have miles of
streets laid with the stones.
