HOT DRY AIR FuR THE MUSCLES.
Successful New Treatment for Rheu-
matism and Sprains.
Experiments have just been con-
cluded at a hospital in this city
with a new method of treatment
for chronic rheumatism and gout
sprains and other diseases of the
joints and muscles which have ex-
cited great inter st in the medical
profession both in England and
America.
The method is known as the Tai-
lerman-Sheffield treatment by the
local application of superheated
dry air.
The effect of the treatment is to
give to the patient in his own house
or in a hospital more beneficial ef-
fects and in a much more perma-
nent form than those obtained by
visiting the various “hot springs"
ami other resorts which are acces-
sible only to the rich.
The apparatus consists of a cop-
per cylinder of varying size accord-
ing to the part ot the bony to be
treated. Its ends are covered with
air tight cloth through which the
limb to be treated passes. The
limb rests on an asbestos frame in-
side the cylinder which does away
with all danger of scorching by the
hot metal The cylinder rests on a
frame under which is a row /if gas
Jets and an arrangement of valves
and stop cocks provides fordrawing
off every particle ol moisture In the
air resulting from perspiration.
The most remarkable feature ol
the apparatus Is that It enables the
patient to bear a temperature of
2511 to 30(1 degrees which If the air
were moist would almost consume
the limb. Not only is there no
scalding but the sensation is posi-
tively a pleasant one and patients
who have been racked with pain for
months have been known to fall Into
a refreshing sleep while undergoing
the treatment.
Mr Tallerman’x method was test
ed thoroughly for two years In St.
Bartholomew's hospital the North-
west London hospital Charing Cross
hospital and St. Mary's hospital In
London. If was officially adoped by
them about two months ago and
has been n-commeded an the best
treatment for Joint affections by
Prof. W. J. Walsham of St. Bar-
tholomew's hospital who declares
that he has substituted It formeth
oils ol treatment which he had been
using for fourteen years.
The effect of the application of
the intense heat generated by the
new apimratus lx to set up a pro-
fuse peiHplriition all over the body
to stimulate the circulation of the
blood mid by softening mid relax-
ing the tissues to aid Its passage
through the congested parts mid
thus aid In cr.rrylng off the morbid
and diseased matter. No Injurious
effect on the heart is produced by
the application of the heat such as
often follows Turkish baths and
other methods of treatment and
for this reason the application can
be continued for one or two hours
