Mr. Charles E. Heard gives no-
tice through the Call that he has
bought the intercut of John G. Sa-
nine and will hereafter go it alone
in the editorial and conduct of the
paper. He has appointed Mr. Joe
R. Beard his son as manager who
will have the soliciting and collect-
ing department of the paper.
Mr. Beard is a graceful and pleas-
ing wi iter and we hope for him
fair sailing in the editorial voyage
in a lone hand.
Mr. Sabine though customarydoes
not make his retiring bow to the
public and we connot say what his
future business will be. We wish
John luck however in whatever
calling he may embark.

Carson Feb. 2-1. Women will be
admitted to the fight. Dan Stuart
through Ids representative madi
tlie following statement: "1 will
admit women to the fight because
some of the most prominent men in
the state have indicated their de-
sire to bring their wives. 1 am not
making this move for the money
there is in it but as a matter of ac-
commodation to the men mention-
ed. If women desire to see the
light I have nothing to say. They
are the best judges as to what they
should and should not see."
Cut This Out.
Tlie Scientific American gives this
recipe which the whole world ought
to know:
"At the first indication of diph-
theria in the throat of a child make
the room close then take a tin cup
and pour into it a quantity of tar
and turpentine equal parts Then
hold the cup over a tire so as to fill
the room with fumes. The little
patient on Inhaling the fumes will
cough up and spit out all the mem-
braneous matter and the diphthe-
ria will pass out. The fumes of the
tar ami turpentine loosen the mat-
ter In the throat and thus afford
the relief that has baffled the skill
of physicians."
The following is from the pen of
some unknown author but is point-
ed and will be worth the perusal of
parents:
"In the boy of today walks the
man ol tomorrow. The shaping of
the career of the man depends upon
the training which the boy receives
In hl* home. The parent* who do
not maintain a constant supervis-
ion over their boys who If not di-
rectly yet indirectly permit them
to associate with evil companions
to spend much of their time on the
street to run about at nights are
sowing seed* which they will some
day reap with sorrow and confusion
of face." _

The New Orleans States is an
even balanced sheet and never goes
off half cocked. It is not Jingoistic
in the least and when we read war
talk from the editor we can almost
smell brimstone burning under the
flint-rock. It says:
"The story told of the imprison-
ment of Dr. Ruiz and his brutal
murder is of peculiar atrocity and
if it turns out to be true the Unit-
ed States should sweep the Spanish
nation from the list of nations. We
are free to say however that we
do not believe the story. In this
controversy Spain owes this coun-
try nothing but courtewy and we
cannot believe however brutal and
bloody the history of Spain that so
Intelligent people would be guilty
of an act of atrocity that must if
true be certain to bring upon her
head tlie vengeance of a powerful
and warlike nation such as is the
United States.
“We believe the story is a scoun-
drelly falsehood; but if it be true
the nations of Hie earth will soon
stand forth and exclaim "Woe to
Spainl" or the United States will be
covered with shame and infamy."
