We spent an hour at Spring Lake
Park yesterday afternoon watch-
ing some young men and boys fish-
ing for perch. The fish were biting
well and we saw some good sized
ones caught. The water is being
let out of the dam and when the
water gets lower the fish will tie
confined in a small body and then
(lie boys will have a picnic sure
enough in pulling them out.

INGALLS ON CLEVELAND.
Washington March 3—The last
day of Grover Cleveland! Had the
American people no other cause
for universal joy this alone would
sufllce. He went into power with
much opposition He goes out with
none. The nation shares the relief
witli which he professes to antici-
pate libration from the cares and
burdens of state If he has a hear-
ty cordial sincere friend advocate
and champion in either house of
congress such a one lurks privily in
' ambush and makes f.no announce-
ment.
Intrusted witli plenary power by
Hie people in 1893 the failure ol his
( administration in every department
I stands confessed. His policy at
home has been destructive and
’ humiliating and ignominious. The
. degraded condition by which lie was
elected made no promises that he
' lias not violated and gave no
pledges that he lias not betrayed.
His tariff reform has afforded neith-
er revenue for t he treasury protec-
tion for capital nor wages for la-
bor. His financial measures have
i restored neither confidence nor
prosperity. Upon the pretext of
( replenishing the gold reserve the
national debt lias been increased
• and bonds sold to favored syndicates
’ to meet the deficiencies in the or-
drinaryexpenses of the government
Ilis diplomacy li.m been apologetk
and vacillating to tlie verge of dis-
honor saved only from Infamy by
Its grotesque and diverting imbecil-

The Hawaiian epsiode would lie
■ incredible in Hie prospectus of a
I comic opera. There lias been no
day in the past four years that has
not witnessed some new triumph in
Clevelandlsin some bank closed;
some railroad in tlie han Is of a re-
ceiver; some merchant broken;
some furnace extinguished; some
maimed and disabled veteran stig-
matized and branded witli dishonor
driven to the asylum or the grave.
Boast Ing ol Ids robust and incor-
ruptible Integrity he retired with
a vast fortune accumulated during
tlie most disastrous period of his
county's history in which millions
have been reduced from alllnence
to want and from poverty to beg-
gary.
History will record Its Incredulity
and that such an Imposter could so
long escape detection. He Is tlm
central llgure of one epoch to which
no lover of his country will ever re-
vert without the blush of indignant
shame at Hie destruction of Ils re-
sources and the degradation ol Its
dignity and hoiior; a period that has
no parallel except In the time of
Walpole described by Macauley as
"the era ol dwarfish and talents and
gigantic vices; the paradise ol cold
hearts and narrow minds; tlie gold-
en age of tlm coward (lie bigot and
’ the slave." Mie bequeaths to ills

ed llnances prostrated Industries
and social discontent which lias al-
ready obllteiiited political frontiers

A CLOSE CALL
Yesterday County Judge Hamil-
ton sent for Dr.S.A.Simmons to ex-
amine a negro man in jail held for
lunacy. The doctor arrived at the
jail and the jailer Mr. Butler turn
ed the crazy negro out in the corri-
dor and let the doctor in turning
the lock on him at the time. There
weresev'eral prisoners in Hie "cor-
ridor" at tlie time and it is to them
I that doctor Simmons owes ids life.
Tlie negro when brought out got
1 upon his knees and prayed a long
prayer and when lie was through
the doctor started toward him to
make the examination. Tlie negro
’ grabbed up a chair and raised it on
' high making for tlie doctor to
strike him. Tlie prisoners saw
what was up and caught the up-
lifted chair and wrenched it away
* from the crazy man who then
caught up a stick of wood and made
1 tor the doctor again but was re-
' straned frbm striking him by tlie
prisoners. At this point tlie jailer
let the doctor out tlie crazy man
was put back in the cage
Tlie doctor tells us lie passed
|. through the late war was in many
battles had ridden through grave
I yards at night and been chased
through tlie bottoms by jack o-lau-
terns but lie was never frightened
halt so bad as lie was yesterday
when that crazy negro was alter
him witli tlie chair and billet of
wood. Tlie doctor wrote out ills
dlagnosesoftlieca.se through tlie
liars and you.can bet lie put him
down as crazy.
