Unexpectedly the Senate com-
mittee on Foreign Relations have
reported In favor of annexing Haw-
aii. It is to be hoped the body will
defeat any such movement and de-
parture from from the "Monroe
doctrine." We cannot afford to
take any such elephant upon our
hands any way.
A (lalveston (Texan) firm recently
received a letter which contained
the following: “I have read so
much about Mardl Gras that 1

I could get the seed and If you
think It Is a good grass to feed cat-

ble." The Iqulrer should have re
ferred to Rex of New Orleans.

“A LICENSE TO STEAL."
That must have been embarrass-
ing information to the United
Slates senate which Statistician
Carroll D. Wright furnished that
body last week concerning the la-
bor cost of lumber in this country
and in Canada. His figures showed
that while the average wages in
Canadian sawmills is sl.-11 and 11.71
per day here the average labor
cost of 1000 feet of lumber is #1.28
in Canada and only 01 cents here.
The decreased cost of production
In this country is attributed to the
superior machinery used. Os
course the figures prove the free
trade contention that the rate of
wages paid does not indicate the
cost of production that low wages
are very often more expensive to
employers and vice versa. Hut
these hard facts furnished by an
officer of the government will not
dissuade the lumber barons from
their purpose to gel a tariff' on Ca-
nadian lumber so that they can the
more effectually rob American con-
sumers Protectionists care noth-
ing for facts. What they want Is

'fhe Hot Weather Statistical
Fiends Get in their Work
PREDICTIONS OF SCIENTISTS.
New Theory Advanced as to the Hot
Weather.
'uU
As each hot season rolls
around the statistical fiends assure
us that the record has never been
broken. During the past two
weeks the heat has been intense.
Scores of people have died and the
record keepers tell us that the
weather Is the hottest ever known.
A scientist up north advances
the theory that these progressive
seasons of heat are due to natural
causes says the Dayton Tenn.
Republican. He says that with
the utilization of large portions of
the earth’s material and its conver-
sion into lighter forms of matter
the density of the body of the earth
is becoming more volatile and in
consequence our planet is approach-
ing the sun. The exhumation ot
Immense bodies of materials from
the bowels of the earth and their
conversion into other and more at-
tenuated forms of matter; tlie de-
nudation of the vast forest lands
and the thousand and one pro-
cesses by which solid bodies are
converted into heat and energy and
hastening the disentergatlon of
the earth and seriously Its solar or-
bit. Tlius it is approaching more
within the magnetic Influence of
the sun until finally just as a
needle Illes to a magnet It will with
one quick leap spring into the em-
braces of old Sol and In the twink-
ling of an eye be utterly consumed
together with everything that is on
It.
The Republican does not vouch
for she accuracy of this theory. It
appears plausible however and a
matter of precaution we sound
thls.fi lendly note of warning and
advise our readers to be prepared
for the worst. It may be probable
that the present torrldlty Is Intend
cd to fitly prepare us for this last
great emergency. We especially
Impress these theories upon our de-
linquent subscribers.

Patronize home industry every
time. This is the only way to make
any sort of prosperity If there is
an article you need and it can be
procured at home do not send away
for It—buy at home and thus keep
the money in circulation where
you can get hold of it again. Mon-
ey earned at home ought to be used
there then all may get benefit out
of it if it is sent away the commu-
nity is drained of just that sum.
This rule applies to newspapers as
well as other lines —if you want but
one paper give the home one the
preference for it is ever alive to
your interests and the interest of
your city.
Stop drugging yourself with
