PACKING HIS GRIP.
SenorDe Lome Writes a Let-
ter to His Friend Canale-
jas But Forgot to
Tell Him to
Burn It.
IN A PECK OF TROUBLE.
He Calls President McKinley a Low
Politician Afraid of the
Rabble
Senor Dupy de Lome as a letter
writer has proven a failure.
He wrote his friend Senor Cana-
lejas his impression of McKinley
and the United States in general
and the New York Journal came in
possession of the same and publish-
ed it autographically and DeLotne
did not deny its authenticity.
The letter in regard to McKinley
says of him:
“ The president’s message has un-
deceived the insurgents who ex-
pected something else and has par-
alyzed the action of congress but I
consider it bad. Besides the natur-
al and inevitable coarseness with
which he repeats all that the press
and public opinion of Spain have
said of Weyler it shows once more
that McKinley is weak and cater-
ing to the rabble and be-
sides a low politician who
desired to leave a door open
to me and to stand well with the
jingoes of his party. Nevertheless
as a matter of fact it will only de-
pend on ourselves whether he will
proye bt’k and adverse to us. I 1
agree entirely with you; without
a military success nothing will be
accomplished there and without
military and political success there
is here always danger that the in-
surgents will be encouraged if not
by the government at least by
part of the public opinion.
It is said that De Lome will be
recalled and it is only a matter of
a short time when some one will
take him by the slack of his pants
and cause him to walk Spanish
from the land on some stage plank
to a steamer bound for his beloved
Spain. Speed the day we say.

Discuss the Advisability of
Having an Excursion Run
Into the City.
THE BAND ENGAGED TO PLAY.
Committees Appointed to Meet the
Kansas Editors To-Day—Other
Matters Talked About.
The meeting called for last night
to meet Mr. J. R. Leming and hear
his proposition as to running ex-
cursion sinto this place from the
northern states was attended last
night by a fair sized crowd cf our
leading business men.
Judge L. A. Byrne was the first
speaker on the floor and he said he
wished to be heard on a subject
perhaps foreign to the one the
meeting was called for neverthe-
less it was pertinent to the occa-
sion. Here the Judge said that the
Kansas newspaper men would ar-
rive here tomorrow (today) and
that Messrs. Edwards and Moffett
would hold the train here two hours
or more to give the Kansas Faber
pushers a chance to see our city
and the Judge suggested that we
raise enough money to hire the
band and entertain them with mu-
sic and if possible give them a car-
riage ride over the city.
' The Judge’s motion was acqui-
esced in and Mr. Louis Heilbron
was made a committeeman to hire
the band and arrange for all ye
hides he could from a voluntary
source.
Mr. Whitley through Judge
Byrne offered his cars free to the
service of the newspaper men and
others asked to be put down as of-
fering carriages and other vehicles.
Money was contributed to pay the
I necessary expense of the blowout.
Mr. J. Y. Leming then address-
ed the meeting stating that he was
an excursion promoter and finding
Texarkana a city of some eight rail-
roads and admirably situated for
manufacturing purposes he
thought he-could bring in here on
an excursion a great many men
who could be induced to move their
“ plants here from the north. To do
this he would only require a nomi-
nal sum to be raised by the citizens
to help him out as he had to offer
low rates to get the people to come
on these excursions and fheir

Wakefield O. P. Taylor G. B. Ellis ; I
and J. L. Whatley all made talks
and all seemed to be taken with the
Leming idea ot getting people here.
On motion the trade was closed
with Mr. Leming to have theexcur-
sion come here and the following «
committees were appointed tosolic- I
it for the $250: West Side Louis *
Heilbron J. M. Benefield and Thus.
H. Estes; East Side L. A. Byrne
F W Offenhauser and .1 W Gardner.
On motion of J. L. W’hatley the
committees were ordered to report
tomorrow night February 11.
Several off-hand speeches were
made as to the needs ot the city in
regard to inducing immigration
here after which the meeting ad- '
journed.
Lady Detained.
The East Side officers arrested a
woman yesterday from an Iron
Mountain train here on a telegram
to hold. They carried her to the
Bickham House awaiting develop- '
ments. The message was first sign- I
ed by the city marshal of Augusta
Ark. The woman says she was
leaving her husband only and had
committed no crime. This morning
another message came to the offi-
cers signed by the husband the
purport we did not get but we learn
that the husband will be in tonight
on No. 5.3 and will then patch up a
truce with his wife and get her to
return with him.
The lady is locked up at the Bick- I
ham House in one of the rooms
and is being cared for at the officers
expense.
