has about come to the conclusion
that he will cut the acquaintance

General Shafter has His Army
in Fine Position for the
Assault on Santiago.
HE WILL USE BIG GUNS.
The Spaniards Cannot Stand a Whist-
ling Shell But Become Panic
Stricken.
Our troops are in position near
Santiago to make a good quick
movenent when the word of advance
is given and there will be no halt
until the city is taken.
Gen. Lawton will probably make
a diversion with his artillery soon as
as it is placed in position. Heavy
rain this afternoon made it impossi-
ble to move today beyond Gen.
Wheeler’s headquarters. But the
roads will dry quickly. The guns
will probably be brought up to-
morrow and the intrenchments
will be shelled by the artillery and
Col. Wood’s dynamite guns. The
shrapne’ fire will be more used by
artillery. The guns are 32 10 inches
and with shrapnel they are effec-
tive at 3500 yards.
The Cubans say the Spaniards
| are in deadly fear of dynamite and
1 Gen. Lawton will see how he can
territy them.
