SENATORS OPINIONS
j' E even Senators Give Their Views
On Buying the Philippines.
{ New York November I.—A new-

I tive to the reported plan of the
» Peace Commission to pay s4uO<i(>-
) 000 to Spain for the Philipines.
; J. K. Jones Arkansas —I do not
I favor paying Spain $40000000 or
; any sum for the Philippines..
j J. H. Berry of Arkansas—l don’t
i favor such a proposition.
) W. A. Harris of Kansas—l am

' ering sovereignty in the Philippines.

It Must be Always Right.
We cannot do right today and
wrong tomorrow. It must be al-
ways right today tomorrow and
eyery day for only by consant cate
and watchfulness can we keep our
lives near the right when so many
stand ready to dim our light and
blight our hopes with temptation
on all sides. No life can be so beau-
tiful as to giye light to others with-
out having its brightness reflected
on the giyer. So not for one
reason but for many should our
examples be of the best. If we will
be faithful we will be blessed and
give joy to those about us.
If you believe in a government of
the people tor the people by the
people; if you think this country is
able to take care of its financial af-
fairs and run them without the pa-
rental guidance of foreign. usurers;
if you believe that the States haye
rights which Federalism is consti-
tutionally bound to respect; if you
hold that law taxes and economic
expenditure under Democratic rule
are better than high taxes and ex-
travagance and corruption under
the rule of the party of Trusts and
Plutocrats—then vote the Demo-
cratic ticket and get out and vote
it early and strong from top to
bottom.—Ex.
Some time ago John Wanna-
maker paid to the Youth’s Com-
panion alone $5000 for one page
advertisement for one insertion.
This same advertiser pays annual
ly SIOOOOO and pays an advertis-
ing manager whose business is to
write his advertisements a salary
of $5000 per year. And yet this
merchant continues successful in
business and has continued success-
fully iu business for twent y years.
Does advertising nay?
It has been asserted that print-
ing in not a healthy business and
that one of its chief ailments is
lead poisoning. 1 can testify to
this from personal knowledge. A
friend of mine oi.ee started a paper
out in Arizona some years ago and
he had not been running six months
before he died ot lead poisoning.
It was a 34 calibre Smith & Wesson
in the hands of a wild eyed miner
which caused the attack. It was
fatal and he has been dead ever
since.- Peck’s Sul.
Texarkana as a cotton market
is forging right ahead and we hear
reports from all over the country
and can say that we are paying
more for cotton right here than
other towns that make more pre-
tentious as a cotton market than
’our city. We see no reason why
farmers should shun our city with
their cotton for It is proven daily
that they can receive more here
than they do by hauling It to other
places.
