THE excessive use of tobacco especially
by young men Is always Injurious and
undoubtedly shortens life materially.
Mr Ed. C. Ebsen compositor on tboContra-

used Dr. Miles’ Restorative Nervine and re-
ceived much benefit from It. I was troubled
with nervousness uilzy spells and sleepless-
ness caused by the u«e of tobacco and stim-
ulants. I took Dr. Miles’ Nervine with mar-
velously good results allaying thedlzxiues
quieting the nerves and enabling mo to
sleep and rest proving In my case a very
beneficial remedy." Dr. Miles’ Kestorath e

The Nicaragua canal bill has the
richt of way in congress now. Noth-
ing definite haa been done yet.
Col. Bryan says silver will be the
issue is 1900. He ought to know.
Other questions will be considered
but silver will be the main one.
If the women folks chased Hob-
son around to kiss him on his re-
turn from Santiago what will they
do to Dewey when he gets back?
If Mr. Dingley doesn’t show up at
the end of the holidays with an au-
tomatic closing device for that open
door he will be uuwerthy of his
mission as drum major of the pro-
tectionists.
There has been ‘found in Manila
by the Astor Battery boys who will
soon be discharged from the service
a Philippine Development Society.
They purpose remaining there and
make money.
American women will oppose the
effort of Brigham Roberts to take
his seat in Congress as a represen-
tative from Utah. They probably
feel that a man with a plurality of
wives cannot retain the serenity of
mind necessary to law-making.
Gen. Fitzhugh Lee is now in Ha-
vana and will see to it that riots are
promptly put down and the ring
leaders punished. It will take only
a sh«rt time to let the Spaniards
know we mean to make them be-
have themselves.
McKinley while swinging around
on his southern trip in Georgia is
making speeches calculated to catch
the southern fire eater. McKinley
is a politician from his No. 9 shoes
to the 61 hat that rests on his knot
above.
Now that McKinley has pur-
chased the Philippine Islands at his
own price (120000000) and tells the
people he has been offered 1200000-
000 for his bargain he can afford to
buy off Aguinaldo who says he will
give a quit claim deed for $20000-
000 more and will then make a fait-
profit on the investment.
McMillan of Tenuess who has been
elected governor has been asked to
offer for the United States senate
but being over an average honest
politician tells his solicitors that
the people made him governor and
he will stand by them till his term
of office Is out. Senator Bate will
have no opponent If McMillan does
not run.
American manufacturers are sell-
ing their products in England Ger-
many aid France cheaper than the
same class of goods mauu factured in
those countries can be sold there
This being the case the American
manufacturer ouglit to be able to
hold his own against the competi-
tion of foreign manufacturers with
out the assistance of extremely
high protective tariffs.

W. J. Bryan has folded his uni-
form and placed it away in a box
with moth bails and instead of
fighting Spaniards in Cuba he will
enter the ring to knock-out repub-
licanism. “W. J. B.” is still muchly
in the push and it the democratic
leaders don’t trade off half the party
vote this time for a handful of pop-
ulists as they did in the last cam-
paign we will stand some chance of
electing a man of silver proclivities.
President McKinley and party
visited Atlanta Wednesday and
Thursday. His speech to the Geor-
gia legislature was the most concil-
iatory speech ever made by a north-
ern man to a southern audience.
He was roundly cheered. Could
Henry W. Grady have been
there and seen a part of the result
of bis work his great heart would
have been immeasurably filled with
pride. This is a united nation in
truth now as it has always been in
name. Our brave confederate he-
roes are no longer called rebels by
the northerners. They are broth-
ers now.
“Shall We Forgive Her” is the
rather curious title of a new play
which seems to have made a hit.
It is one of Jacob Litt’s ventures
and he has engaged Marie Wain-
wright to play the leading role.
Miss Wainwright says she likes melo-
drama and the audiences which go
to see melodrama. She has not
appeared in this style of drama
since she entered upon her dramatic
career twenty years ago. Miss
Wainwright will play here next
month and will be given a crowded
house for she is an actress recog-
nized the world over for her talent
in melodrama parts.
STRANGER IN NEW YORK.
Sickness prevented the reporter
from taking in the above play last
' night but he wax told by those
! who did go that it was a splendid
> attractiou and was enjoyed by all.
1 There was some misunderstanding
. between the company’s manager
and Mr. Whitley after the first act
and it was announced from the
stage that the opera house mana-
ger wanted all the pie and not di-
■ vide and unless the audience helped
. him to make the manager to dis-
gorge or words to this effect he
would declare the show off and
would uot run the curtain up again.
This caused a commotion for a
' while but the trouble was adjusted
f and the curtain went up.
t Politeness Brings a $5000 Legacy.
A young lady in a department
store has just fallen heir to $5000.
' The money was left by an eccentric
i old lady who was treated with great
. politeness by the young woman
when shopping. Her joy was as
great as her surprise when the
money was given her Surprise
