A Pistol Shot Rang out on the
Air Which Caused a
Crowd to Gather.
THC SCENE ON STATE LINE.
A Negro Cow Thief Making His Es-
cape From His Captors the
Cause of the Commotion.
Yesterday afternoon the hour
being 8 o’clock and the Salvation
Army was holding their open air
meeting on Broad street and State
Line avenue a pistol shot raug out
on the air and the crowd about the
Army made a brake for the man
with the smoking pistol in his hand

Heihowever lost his coat and vest
in the struggle. After freeing him-
self he dodged into the alley near
by which put him on Texas soil.
One of the men raised his pistol and
fired at him. The negro kept on
running west to State street hotly
pursued by- first One and then an-
other who heard men shouting be
hind to catch him.
The negro took refuge under the
house of Dr. Collom on State street
where he was made to come out by
several pistols poked at him. He
did not come »ut to surrender how
ever for he struck the air running
and someone fired again the bullet
missing its mark but struck a house
three blocks away going through
the wall and landing on the bed oc-
cupied by a Mr. Chalker.
The negro ran to Eighth street
and across Maple at the Whitley
residence and kept west until he
reached Spruce street and turned
north on Spruce and ran to Tenth
where he darted under a new house
being built by Mrs. Perry running
out on the west side where he had
a friendly patch of woods to help
him dodge bullets should any be
fired at him. At this point there
were several men and a dazen boys
after him some within ten feet.
The negro crossed the yards of the
K. C. P. &G. road and the cars
gave him advantage for when the
pursuers gamed the other side of
the track they could not see him.
They soon scattered out in search
and reaching theRunnels placewas
told that he started in the barn
was frightened off and that they
thought he was under the house
but a search could not find him there
A boy with an eye of an eagle
saw him in a cedar tree and gave
the alarm; when the negro saw he
would soon be surrounded he jump-
ed to the ground and made for the
house and in some manner got on
the roof and worked his way to the
chimney and pulling bricks from
the top hurled them at the men
and boys below. Several shots
were made to dislodge him none
aimed to hit him howerer and this
not having the desired efTect the
men and boys.began to chunk him
with rocks and bricks and he came
bouncing down onto a shed room
with a handfull of brick with which
to fight.
Soon after he hit the ground a
negro man ran into him and threw
his arms around him but he was
too much for his captor and releas-
ing bis arms he encircled t lie negro's
neck and was choking him when a
young white man ran to his assist-
ance and hit him a lick over the
head with a 44 calibre pistol which
dazed him and he was captured
and brought back to the city by
Deputy Constable Styles Ragland
and Jailer Butler both of the Kaat
Side and placed in jail.

Colonel Ab Lowry of Hope Ar-
kansas was in the city today and
he was the “hottest looking” “pat-
tern plate” we have seen in a long
time. Those who know the Colonel
know that he dresses in the very
latest stylein fact he could giye the
Prince of Wales a few dots on how
to look “fetching” and this morn-
ing when we saw his well polished
oxbloods his dove colored overcoat
his dog skin gloves his high striped
collar and red four in hand with a
world’s fair derby on his head we
mentally said some pretty maiden
will get stuck on Ab before the day j
is out. Ab is a dude in dress there I
is no mistake but then he has no
clock works in his head and a good
companionable fellow. The report-
er registers Mr. Lowry as one of
his best friends and can enjoy
a chat with him on all occasions
Marshal Hugh Dean and consta-
ble Rochelle of the west side
caught two men at the union
depot this morning whom they be-
lieve to be grafters or confidence
me«. They were carried to the
county court room and were being
held under guard pending a war
rant being Issued for them. The I
reporter made an effort to find out
more about the case but he did |
not.
Quit Warren came in yesterday
from San Antonio where he has
been camped as a volunteer soldier
in the fourth Texas regiment. He
was a non-com missioned officer and
the uniform he wore back here was
quite becoming. He told the re-
porter he had succeeded in getting
a discharge and would make this
place his home again.
