have elected me several times to fill this
position and my fourth term of two years
each is about to expire. On this acconnt
I have been reluctant to further tax your
generosity but I have recently received
unsolicited proffers of support from so
many citizens of the town that I feel it is
the wish of the majority of those Interest-
ed that I should fill another term.
I can only refer to my official record to
the committee of expert accountants who
annually examine my books and to the
Finance Committee of the City Council to
examine and report on my monthly collec-
tions and disbursements.

try to perform the duties of the office as
faithfully and Impartiallv as I have in the
past. Respectfully

According to statistics presented
bylhe government it cestsover five
cents a pound to raise cotton. Is it
not folly to raise it? Why will our '
farmers continue to raise so much
of it? Surely they have had expe-
nence enough to let up on such big ■
crops—at least we hope so.
While Sampson Long and Mc-
Kinley are discussing what part
Schley took in the destruction of
Cenrera's fl-et they should inter-
view those Spaaiards whom Schley
faced oa the eventful day aad not
take Sampsons word for it for he
was out of reach of shot and shell.
If the burning up of coaquested
territory keeps on as a means of
warfare by those whom we are sup-
posed to have conquered and re-
quested we wiii "have to organize
fire companies to take along with
our army of occupation —look at
Manila.
Aguinaldo now wants peace but
Gen. Merritt refuses to recognize
him in any capacity. Good. Let
him aud the Philippinos be forced
to lay down their arms. Obstrep-
erous and stubborn savages have to
be dealt with in a severe and un-
flinching manner.
Miniugitis is getting to be a much
dreaded pest as it seems to become
epidemic. Van Buren has had a
siege of it and now physicians
around Pine Bluff repoit an epi-
demic of the disease in and around
that city and they say that many
recent deaths may be attributed to
this fearful disease. There is much
suffering throughout the city as a
result of illness of this type.
At last the two houses of con-
gress agreed upon an army bid. It
empowers the president to increase
trmy to 100000 if he deems it ne-
cessary but limits the time to
about one year. It is stated that
the Senate passed measure to avoid
a special session of the next con-
gress aud in order to retain its
corps of officers j util next Decem-
ber. Shame on Democrats if they
let as small a consideration as th.s
influence them in such a moment-
ous question.
Still More Counterfeiting.
The Secret “Sei vice has unearthed
mother band of counterfeiters and
secured a large quantity of bogus
bids which are so cleverly executed
that the average person would nev-
er suspect them of being spurious
Things of great value are selected
iy counterfeiters for imitation no-
tably the celebrated Hostetter's
Stomach litters which lias many
imitators out no equals lor indiges-
tion dyspepsia constipation ner-
v usness and general debility. The
Bitters sets things right in the
-tomach. aud when the stomach is
in good order it makes good blood
ind plenty of it. In this manner
he Bitters get at the seat of vital-
ly and strength and restore vigoi

ware of counterfeits when buying.
The Courier-Journal says that the
most serious clanger that now cou-
ronts this country is over-produc-
tion. There was an overproduction
last year of several products al) of
which except one were disposed of
at profitable prices. Overproduc-
tion will be welcomed if we can si - |
cure new markets for the surplus.
But the trouble is in our financial
system gold standard. There isso
little money aud it is so hard to.
get that people are forced to buy
less of both food and clothing. It'
produc s want and beggary. With
free silver and more money true
prosperity would reign - then m me
would be much easier to get and
this would create a big demand for
all products.

THE SIGNAL OF LIBERTY
The above play was given to a
good sited audieoee lut night be-
sides a heavy gallei y.
There were no programs distrib-
uted anJ we cannot individualize.
The acting was fair and the scenery
1 u»ed good.
The entering of the battleships
Wilmington aud Maiee into Havana
harber and the blowing up of the
latter was realistic.
The panorama at the close rep-
resenting our naval strength on sea
was fine and worth the price of ad-
misson within itself. This pano-
rama is painted on an endless chan
->f cloth many yards long and its
width goes about the height of the
stage and is moved on windlesses
across the stage making it appear
as if we were looking at real ships
in water when in fact we only see
painted representations. T’te
troupe is giving a good patriotic
show and it should be the means of
getting many young men to enlist
in liberty's cause should our country
need their services
The same piece will be given to-
night and we ask that they be
given a good house.
