In our next war for humanity we
shall perhaps take care not to put

necessary however to have one we
shall doubtless Insist that the price

Since the South furnished the
raw materials the Iu tones to
manufacture the same should be
located here. We have enough

to use it.

With a deficiency of about ♦150-

is tdlk ®f another bond issue. Wr
can not see the necessity for issue-

good for all debts both public and
private can be made to pay off all
debts. This would stop heavy in-

Journalism we notice of late has
drifted down stream with an awful
swirl. A man who once belonged
t» the Jessie James gang of cut
throats and robbeis can go in a
town and get a better notice than
can a man who has lived an honest
and upright life and who has done
i something to build up the morals oi
the country instead of pulling them
down.

ARKANSAS SILVER MINIB
Silver City Ark.
February 17 1599
Jules A. Gibson Texarkana. Tex-
as: In answer to your letter of in-
quiry concerning this section of the
country as a rich mineral region
and the outlook for a thorough de
velopment of the vast wealth that
lies hidden in the mountains and
gulches of Montgomery county I
will give you a brief summary of
what has been done in the past io
the line of mining operations and
the present status of our mining
enterprises :
The late Diamond Joe Reynolds
did the first work in this camp in
the way of opening up silver mines
and was successful in developing a
mine of very high grade silver ore.
His last shipment of ore to the
Chittenham works at St. Louis
netted ♦3(17.00 to the ton. These
shipments were made from the
propertv at Silver City called the
“Minnesota Mine" and which is
now operated by the Housley Bros.
of Hot Springs.
The “Montezuma Mine” now se-
cured bv patent from the govern
ment is one of the best properties
in the camp. Sam Rinaskopf re-
fused an offer of ♦!25000 for this
mine.
The “Walnut" mine now in litiga-
tion has produced some of the
highest grade ores ever unearthed
in this or any other mining camp.
There are numerous other mining
properties here which have shipped
1 o e to the Kansas City and Aurora
reduction works and realized very
h indsome profits. Among them I
• might mention “Elnora” “Watei-
. 1 >o" “Black Lodi” and “Minnie
Kramer.” The last named is in
i full tide of successlul operation and
. is now sacking up ore for shipment.
With the advent of Spring we an-
ticipate some extensive operations
in the line of mining enterprisesfor
• it has bet a demonstrated that in
this mineral belt a e vast deposits
of wealth that only await the
magic touch of skilled labor backed
by capital to unearth the hidden
treasures which are destined to
make this one of the richest mining
camps in America.
1 have given you a brief outline
or sketch of this mineral region
yet sufficient to give you an idea of
the fabulous wealth which the
grand arcana of nature has in re-
serve for capital nerve and skil'ed
labor to develop.
Affectionately your brother

Tom Bowers in his Cannon at
Austin is trying to shoot state
prohibition into the legislature and
have them pass a law against the
open saloon. When we knew the
colonel down here he was always
trying to put down whiskey but he
did it by crooking the elbow in
front of the bar. We are glad to
see t hat he has reformed and should
he evolve somy law and have it
passed and enforced to step men
from throwing away their money
on the open saloon he wid become
a greater man than those
who are now sleeping under heroic
shafts of granite. There is no
doubt but what the open saloon's
doing more harm to our countiy
than could any combined enemy
making an assault upon us with
ships and land forces but the
colonel had as well try to put a
broom stick under the Rocky Moun-
tahis as a lever and try to turn it
over as to get a Texas legislator to
raise his voice against the open
saloon

The Arkansas Gazette who bar
It'S ear to the gover«or’» telephone
•r at least it appears so to us has
this to say in regard to the way the
commission plums will be dished
out to the candidates:
“In regard to the personnel of
the commission the McUain-Niel-
Haraby possibility mentioned in
these co'umns yesterdiy created
no little interest though then
were many who argued that the
appointment of Mr. Hamby as one
of the commissioners was not cer-
tain and that judge W. F. Avera
of Camden or J. W. Harriss ol
Texarkana might get one of the
plums. In case judge McCain de-
clines the supposed tender the gos-
sips mention judge L. C. Balch
whose friends say he is the father
of the railroad commission move-
ment away back in the legi-lature
of 1887. There is apparently no
let up on the part of those appli-
cants—and their name is legion—-
who are not mentioned in the Me
Cain-Hamby-and—somebody-else
trio.
The dust has been arrested on
Broad street by general Charles
Ockander but tny how it does fly
on the cross town streets. Yester-
day we heard a lady tell anothei
that she had swallowed a peck o!
dirt while coming to town to do
some shopping and she did not pro-
pose to come down on such another
expedition during March. Our city
is not financially able to sprinkle all
the streets we know and we do not
advise them to try but Broad
street needs a good man at the
head of the sprinkling department
and we believe we have got a Dewey
at the head of this department in
Charles Ockander.
There is not a doubt but what
the peach crop has been killed
about Texarkana. The reporter
lias a dozen trees and he knows
that the peaches on them this year
will be nit as an examinatiou of
the bloom shows this plainly
