A Dog i Fidelity.
A few days ago a gentleman by
the name of Shoemaker who
worked at the Four C mill con-
cluded to leave the city and take
his family with him. He sold his
furniture to Hardin Brothers even
down to the baby buggy but re-
tained it to wheel the baby to the
depot giving his word that he
would deliver it when he came
down to take the train which he
did. The departing family owned
a dog and this dog followed
them to the depot and was aband-
oned by them at the depot but he
had followed the baby buggy be-
fore and knew it perhaps by scent
and when it was rolled to Hardin
Brothers store he followed it and
crouched under it. He was offered
food and water but would not
notice either and after two days
and two nights fasting he was tied
with a string by a boy who coaxed
him until be could handle him and
lead him to the Hardin homewhere
he will be fed ar.d given drink. It
looks like a sin to abandon a brute
thus when that brute has the love
of a family instilled in it as had
this dog.

CsreieM Speech.
In the bewildering multiplicity of
societies for all sorts of purposes
geod bad and indifferent we now
have still another whose members
pledge themselves as follows: “1
pledge myself to refrain from par-
ticipating in scandal gossip or
aught that may produce mischief
remembering that death and life
are io the power of the tongue
and whoso keepeth his tongue
keepeth his'soul. I further promise
to speak the wise and helpfui won
whenever possible nor by look
sound sign or action help to con-
vey the impression that 1 know ill
of another."
This certainly is a society with a
laudable purpose. It is wise to
throw our wills on the side of kind
words and deeds that never die and
then to trust God to save us fully
from ail evil words and deeds into
all charitable conversation and con
duct. The habit—for it is often
nothing more—or deteriorating
speech is so common that it would
be well for all of us to stop and
think about it
— —•—
From all over the country come
words of praise for Chamberlain s
Cough Remedy. Here is a sample
letter from Mrs. C. Shep of Little
Rock Ark. 1 was suffering from a
very severe cold when I read of the
cures that had been effected by
Chamberlains Cough Remedy. 1
concluded to give it a trial and ac-
cordingly procured a bottle. It
gave me prompt relief and 1 have
the best reason for recommending
it very highly which I do with pleas-
ure." For sale by Smith Drug Co.
Summer Normal.
We had the pleasure of meeting
Bowie county’s representative to-
day in the person of Hon. W. C.
Rochell who will return to Austin
on Monday. Among other things
told us Mr. Rochel) said he had
been working on State Superintend-
ent Kirkendall to establish a sum-
mer normal at Texarkana for the
counties of Bowie Cass Marion
Morris Hopkins and perhaps other
near by countes and that the sup-
erintendent had promised to do so
provided the teachers of these coun-
ties favor our city. Mr. Rochell
laid the matter before Prof. Owens
and he or some one iterested will
have he work up the interest of
this place and get the superintend-
ent to establish it here.
Texarkana is the logical place for
it as we have railroads diverging
from this place and penetrating
these counties we have any num-
ber of good private boarding houses
where the teachers can make them-
selves comfortable at a small cost.
Our water is good society good
plenty of churches of all denomi-
nations and above all we have a
splendid brick school house which
would be given the normal ftee.
We ask our citizens to take an
interest in this matter and see that
Texarkana secures this school.
