Ou the advice of the attorney
the strip of land between Port
Arthur canal and that part hold-
ing the gulf water was cut out on
Friday night and uow boats now
drawing ten foot of water can pass
out at Sabine Pass. Some legal
complications caused the hurry it
is supposed.
Two burglars came near being
killed by Mr. Frank D'Arrigo last
night about mid-night. He and his
wife heard the prowlers at work
trying to break open the door to
his store and stealthily watching
for them intended to plug them
with hi» winchester rifle. Burglars
heard a noise and started to run off
before he had an oppartunity to
tire at them but he shot at them
twice anyhow at long range and
can not tell whether or not he
wounded either.
Saturday night as Officer East
was making his rounds through the
alley back of Brown & Co's grocery
store he discovered a blaze in the
rear of the store ir. what is known
as the cellar that part of the
grocery store cut off from the main
store and used for storing feed
. stuff and heavy goods. The blaze
■ was conning from a box of trash
’ and would have set the building on
tire had it not been discovered at
I the time. Officer East called out
- the two fire companies and they
1 responded promptly. The door of
the store was forced open and it
was found that the blaze could be
put out with a few buckets of wa-
ter which was done. .Mr Brown
• thinks a cigar must have been
I thrown in the box or else swept up
from the floor and put in there
with the sweepings of the house as
’ it is customary to clean up and all
1 the trash put in this box until it is
■ carted off and burnt it was a
close call and will cause him to be
. more cautious in the future before
closing up for the uijjlit. We are
- truly glad he did not get burnt out
' or damaged.
