Future of the Bicycle
r
1 It is agreed by all bicycle manu
t facturers that the 1899 models rep-
s resent the perfect wheel. Improve-
. ments seems to be impossible. Pre
cisely the same thing is true of Hos-
j tetter’s Stomach Bitters. It rep-
resents the limits of science in over-
e coming disease and it is impossible
> to make a better medicine for the
* stomach liver kidneys and blood
A few doses of the Bitterswill start
weak nervous and bloodless people
i on the road to strength. A regu-
' lar course of treatment will bring
back the pink to the cheeks and
sparkle to the eye. Sleep will come
naturally and it will be refreshing
‘ and healthful. Dyspepsia indiges
t tion and constipation will be per
fectly banished and the blessings
of true health bestowed. Never
1 take a substitute for this perfect
remedy.

I HOTEL SUPERSTITION.
In making our rounds to the
three leading hotels this morning
the reporter made the following
observations:
The Hnckins House had opened a
new register and we found three
names—arrivals written on the
I same. Outside of this nothing out
of the usual was going on in the
I rotunda.
Passing to the Cosmopolitan
Hotel we found the same kind of
register just opened and three
names registered. Speaking to the
proprietor of the co-incident he
fell into a reverie and got to talk-
ing hotel. He said: “Did you know
that the human race was supersti-
cious and the hotel man more so
than anyone else. Why” he con-
tinued ‘‘l can hardly get a man to
take No. 13 although it is the best
room in the house and furnished
with extraordinary care. This is
the guest however and not the
proprietor where the proprietor's
superstition is developed the strong-
est is in not allowing the register
to be closed from the time it is
spened until it is closed and laid
away in the attic.”
At this point Mr. McCartney put
his new register forward and said:
“I have passed two steel rods
through the backs in such a man-
ner that they cannot be closed un-
til they are removed.”
When the reporter laughed at
him for letting this foolish idea
take lodgement in the wheel work
of his bead he said: “I will just
1 cite you to the following facts
which are on record in hotel litera-
ture. The day before the Baldwin
hotel was burnt in San Francisco
some one thought to play a trick
1 on the hotel clerk by closing the
register; which the clerk regarded
as a certain omen of disaster. The
same thing happened the day be-
fore the Hotel Gumry in Denver
was blown up by explosion aid I
expect to hear of the latter hotel
burning in New York where so
’ many lives were lost from the fact
that the register was closed on
: this day or the day before.”
Leaving the Cosmopolitan hotel
for the Raudolf we found while
no new register bad been opened
the old one had several arrivals on
its open pages for the day’s
business. Mr. Faull the clerk had
nothing to report except he showed
us a coin silver cabinet made
for the counter to hold matches
tooth-picks etc. It looked some-
thing like a cash register but was
put up for an advertising scheme
and we counted twenty of our lead-
ing merchants and business firms
represented in neat cards soliciting
trade from the hotel guests and
others who might stop to read.

Russia's Obsolete Calendar.
Inasmuch as all nationsof Europe
and America except Russia have
been using the Gregorian calender
since 1582 aud as the Julian calen-
dar used in Russia is known tojbe
unscientific and inaccurate the
czar is considering the desirability
of changing to the Gregorian cal-
endar In the year 1900.
The Julian calender takes its
name from Julias Caesar who at
the beginning of the year 46 A. D.
fixed the length of a year as 3651
days and threw io a day in Febru-
ary once in every four years But
as the real length of a solar year
was eleven minutes and fourteen
seconds shorter than the year
adopted by Julius Caesar it was
found in 1582 that the vernal equi-
nox had retrograded from March
21 to March 11. In that year
therefore P. pe Gregory XIII di-
rected that ten days be suppressed
in the calendar and ordered that in
every fourth year ending an even
hundred years there should be no
extra day in February unless the
year was exactly divisible by 400.
Russia however has never adopt-
ed the Gregorian calendar-and as
February in the years 1700 and 1800
had 29 days in Russia aud had only
28 In the other European countries
Russia Is now 12 days behind the
rest ot the civilized world—Chicago

Captain W. K. Lloya while here
made Dr. R. H. T. -Mann happy by
presenting him with a Coban
weapon known as a machete. It
is a long wide heavy knife and
made more to cut uown cane and
palmeto which the soldier is re-
quired to penetrate in his marches
but should he engage into a hand
to hand encounter with an enemy
it would prove to be a dangerous
tool for one swing of it would de-
copitate a head or sever a man s
arm or leg.
The history of this particular
weapon is given in the note of pre-
sentation and is as follows:
Dr. R. H. T. Mann Dear Sir:—
This macheta was captured in the
trenches of Santiago de Cuba by
Trooper Fitch of the Rough Riders
brought to Montauk Point and
again “captured” by a corporal of

Charley said: “I rode my wheel last

went in until after services.” When
he went to mount his silent horse
he found that some one had stolen
his kit of tools. He thinks it some
