Mayor W C. Hardiu will leave
tonight for Waco Texas as a dele-
gate from the K. O. T. M. Camp of
Maccabees at this place. The
meeting is a state one and the
mayor will hold up the Texarkana
end of the society with dignity-
should it come to a show down of
this kind.
Crooks Peyton is here today
from Springhill La. Crooks is liv-
ing down in a “tickey country”
but from bis shirt coPa’’ and cuffs
one would judge that he lives on
fifth avenue New York and car-
ried his eye glasses in his pocket.
Crooks is all right and came up to
see his girl. We hope she will say
“yes” this time old boy.
Captain A. S. Blythe has been
given a contract on the east side to
keep down the dust with a sprink-
ling cart. His contract is dated
from March 15 1899 to Nov. 15
1899. The captain will do his best
to fulltill the letter of his con-
tract.
The city election day on the west
side is moving along in tolerable
fair grooves of peace. The city at-
torney’s office will be scrambled for
as also the office of city secretary.
There are three candidates for city-
marshal but none as them are cut-
ting the ice ot popular enthusiasm
and it will be get there if you can
with all three candidates without
the usual hurrah over this office.
Since they have struck oil in Cor-
sicana it has become so cheap that
several cities in Texas are buying
it to dust the streets. It sells r'or
ninety cents a barrel in tank cars
' and it is said to be the very thing
to keep dust from flying. Fort
J Worth has bought a car load aud
will test it as a dust layer. Our
city should watch and see what
' luck other cities have and catch on.
I
Broad street certainly shows up
( well since it has been paved with
our natural cement gravel. After
being used awhile it is almost im -
possible for a pick to dig down into
it which shows that it serves its
purpose well. Os course it is not as
' good as vitrified brick but all the
same is several hundred per cent
better than the sand and mud we
have had for years past. Vitrified
: brick can easily be laid upon our
i macadam within a few years and
at about one-half the cost before
street was graveled. The Texar-
Kanian is proud to see the improve-
ment just made for it has worked
| hard for it for nearly seven years in
educating our people up to such
greatly needed necessities.
BEST OF ALL
To cleanse the system in a gentle
1 and truly beneficial manner when
• the Springtime comes use the true
I and perfect remedy Syrup of Figs.
Huy the genuine. Manufactured by
’ the California Fig Syrup Co. only
and for sale by all druggists at 50
> cents per bottle.
