TEXARKANA ARKANSAS. TUESDAY MAY Hi 1899
CITY COURT
The city court itad a bench full!
11 J . if
’ of prisoners this tn armng—seven m
i all. Six of them hi sard the charge
read to them and
i if th sy‘ were guilty
said they were dot engaged at
any work just then and denied
that they were just common hoboes
and produced letters to show that
they had been at work. Recorder
Murphy told them ’to go and seek
work if they could find it but not
! trespass around Texarkana or he
would have to put them on the
street.
A black looking negro with a
blood shot eye was charged with
raising a row with a dusky damsel
and defying the whale household to
knock a chip off his shoulder.
While this coon was cutting up his
capers the colored people tele-
phoned for an officer and Marshal
Casey caught him using vile lan-
guage. He was made to pay a fine
of one dollar and cost for his devil-
ment.
Among the passengers that came
in on the Cotton this morn-
ing was a bride and groom and ac-
companing them was two good look-
ingyoung ladieswhether of the brid-
al party the reporter knew not but
he was standing at the office desk
the groom came out and settled
for four breakfasts with the propri-
etor. Pretty soon the young ladies
came up to the counter and asked
for their bill and thtey were told
that the same had been settled by
the gentleman to which they loud-
ly demurred and said they did not
intend to have their bill paid by
him that it was an Imposition and
that they would pay! Here both
talking on the above strain giv-
en pulled out their pocket books
exhibited all kinds of bills and each
placed a five dollar bill on the coun-
terand insisted that they would
pay the bill. They raised (such a
racket over the matter that Mr.
McCartney told them that while
their bill had been settled he knew
of no law to keep him for receiving
pay a half dozen times for the
meal they bad consumed under the
press that was then being brought to
bear on him and a further tender
of the money he received it and
placed in the cash register. They
reached for their bills put them
back and muttering that it was
too bad that they were not allowed
to blow their Emoney crossed the
street and resumed their travel on
the Cotton Belt north.
Yesterday in answer to inquiry
of patrons we stated why we did
not go into any voting scheme.
This morning’s Courier tries to give
us a hard “dig in the ribs" for
same. We did not mention that
paper and why it should wince and
growl we know not. In said ai ti
de it glibly talks of the big expense
etc but further down acknowledges
that transportation is gotten in ad-
vertising. We have an advertising
contract with same company. In
another place in paper Courier says
that it had already sold enough
tickets to pay expense of the trip
—this although voting contest
has only started good with another
month and more to run when the
excitement may run votes of many
candidatesup into the tens of thou-
sands and overflow Its coffers- but
it “kicks" very lustily because
somebody is seemingly bringing in-
fluences to bear in favor of one can
didatewhich might prevent thou-
sands of votes being cast for otht rs.
We might make some real I)a rd hits
at the whole thing as that paper
saw fit to ring us into the game
but forbear. However we desire
to say we have never yet earned a
1 dollar except by hard and honest
toil—have never yet beaten any
man out of a cent. This in reply
our contemporary laying we would
“snatch" money etc.

There being no rhyme for Funs-

obliged to substitute something
like this:
Then all to ouceton
Up rose Fred Funston
And swiftly did runston
With ready gunston
And one by onceton
The Kansas sonston
Saw how 'twas donestun —
And then 'twas wonston.
Hooray for Funston!

Mr. Whitley and family returned
yesterday from their outing in the
country. Mr. Whitley tells us he
and his family spent the day witli
Daniel Dobry at the Jim Moore i
place on the Boston road by invi-
tation and that lie was much
pleased with what he saw of Bowie
county in the ten mile trip he had
through the country. He also said
Mr. Dobry fed them on tlie very
best and had wine brought up from
his cellar that had beads on it that
stood up on the wine like young
soap bubbles.
Rev. J. H. Barkwell a well known
Presbyterian minister at this place
though stationed at Hope was
here yesterday on his way to Den
ver Col. to attend the general
Presbyterian Assembly as ad. le-
gate from Mound Prairie Presbj-
tery. There may be “bigger guns”
at the meeting but for cleverness
and a man witli a pure heart none
can surpass Brother Barkwell. We
wish him a pleasant trip and a safe
return with a mind freighted with
the good things lie hears.
