Army Worm at Work
Yesterday Messrs W. L. Davis
and I. F. Jones both living in Day
Creek township called In to show
us what they call the grass worm
but in reality the army worm or
one that is equally destructive. Mr
Davis tells us he has given up s -ven
acres of cotton to them but has
plowed ditches around a fifteen
acre patch and thinks he can save
this much of his crop.
The worm is nothing more than a
migratory caterpilla and forages
on anything green it comes across
eating in the day and traveling at
night. They are reported as
crawling northeast and nothing
but a ditch around the field will
stop them not that they turn back
for the ditch but fall into it and '
cannot get out. They do not live
long if kept away from food. Mr.
Davis says they bore into the boll
of cotton and eat the leaf stem of
the weed.
In corn the worms eat the silk
and bore into the ear near the lit-
tle end and there remain until they
die. The worm is about one inch
long has white stripes on the back
and two black stripes on the side.
He is very apprehensive that they
will destroy the crop iu the county.
Those who live on farms are lia-
ble to many cuts burns and bruises
which heal rapidly when Ballard’s
Snow Liniment is promptly applied.
Price 25 and 50 cents.
