A. L. Ghio has in a notice asking
for bids. He is going to erect two
brick stores on his corner lots on
Broad aud State street and con
tractors should read his notice and
put in their bids as they have only
five days to figure on the work.
Mrs. Pelisola proprietress of the
California restaurant bought the
Behan house on Spruce street cor-
ner of Clinton paying SI6OO for
same. We learn she will expend
SIOOO more on the house in making
it larger.
Farmer L. C. Gregoty. who lives
four miles south of the city culti
vated this spring one and a half
acres in watermelons; he told us
yesterday that he had sold already
$l5O worth of melons from.this crop;
that he thought his chances good
to get SIOO more before the season
closes.
The adjusters were here yester-
day and viewed the Briley stock of
goods as also Brown and Tyler to
determine the damage done them
by the recent fire. Mr. Briley as a
coma quence opened his store for
business. Just what amount of
damage was agreed upon was not
learned. ______

came in last night from Kansas
City. Mr. Dodson’s car was switch-
ed over to the Cotton Belt track
and be went on to Tyler while Mr.
Green remained here.
Mr. Higgins will move into the
store now occupied by Sharpe A
Brewer as soon as they vacate on
August I. It is said Jim Mullins
and Mr. O'Neal will open a clothing
store in the building now occupied
by Mr. Higgins.
The young people were given a
dance at Preston Springs Friday
night and a good big jolly crowd
of young people went out. The
grounds were lighted with Chinese
lanterns and presented a fine ap-
[rearance. Ice cream and cake was
served.
While at the Pee Gee depot yes-
terday we noticed several fine
watermelons being loaded on the
north bound express train as also a
couple hundred pounds of ice mark-
ed Foreman Hotel Baker Springs.
This makes us wish we were going
up to this famous water place it
for no other reason than to see
those fine melons cut.

Mr. Ragland has let the contract
to Crenshaw & Neal to fill a couple
of lots for him on the corner of 6th
and State streets. These lots are
occupied by two houses which will
be raised two feet before the dirt
is put on the ground. The houses
will be high and dry when the con-
tractors get through.

We overheard Ben M. Foreman
proprietor of the Baker Springs'
Hotel offer Dave Ingram his board
for the season if he would come to
the springs and sing three songs a
day. Mr. Ingram said “consider me
engaged.” We never heard Mr. In
gram sing but as a stump speaker
he has no equal. He will prove an
attraction for the Springs.

The happiest man in town yester-
day was Henry Platz. Henry
agreed to take a telephone at his
house which is beyond the Inter
State College building and when he
received a summon to come to the
phone and his wife called his name
over the wire he was just too hap-
py to stand still and he danced a
jig in celebrating the event. Those
having phones on College Hill now
besides Mr. Platz are Mr. Wilson
Choate Prof. Owings Dr. Johns
Mr. Vaughn Mr Keely Kirby Beach
and Mr. Jake Bickley.
Bob Council who has been sick
over a year wandered away from
home on Friday. He is subject to
paralysis and»has spells of fainting.
His family is distressed at his disap-
pearance. Any information lead-
ing to his whereabouts will be
thankfully received. Information
left at Purifoys' store will be con-
veyed to the family. When he left
home had on a black derby hat
brown vest and brown striped shirt
and carried a ladies’ parasol. His
wife thinks he has strayed off in the
woods and died.
