IS THE DEVIL DEAD?
— I
In a very serious vein though
with a commendable desire for hith-
er knowledge an exchange asks the
world at at large if the Devil is
dead? Regardless of the teachings
of advanced (?) theology a brother
editor without hesitation commits-
himself upon the question as fol-
lows: “The Devil is not dead. If
indications count for anything he ;
is more active and energetic today
than any time in the course of two i
centuries. He seems to be stand-
ing astride the country a very
colossus of evil. In fact he is in I
evidence everywhere and at all
times. Liars abound greed is up-
permost and lechery is defended in
the mouth of respectable people.
Corruption and bribery in official
places is the rule; demagogues are
exalted by the people and the
greatest of sins are tolerated on
the extremely broad liberal and
advanced ground we have occupied.
Viciousness is in our books filth in
our play houses scandie and rotten-
ness in our newspapers To the ob-
servant man the stage of public
morality in this country seems nev-.
er to have been so low. In the best j
theatre iu St. Louis only recently |
the house was packed to the r< of ■
to witness a play whose only attrac-
tion was its filth men women and J
children deserting elevating and re-
lined productions to see a nasty
French farce in which a woman I
disrobed and went to bed in plain 1
view of the audience.Newspapetsare -
supposed to be in a measure regu-!
iators of public morals but in this
instance the greatest newspaper in
St. Louis went no further in con-
demnation than a little facetious
comment. The same play ran 200
nights in New York. These are
dangerous symptoms indeed. It is
degeneracy or the turning loose of
all restraint in the name of individ-
ual liberty. Better a few of the
very bluest of the blue laws than a
license. Immorality may not be
eradicated but can be restrained.
Looking the whole field over we
are constrained to remark that the i
Devil is not dead. Mark of the
cloven hoof confronts us wherever 1
we may turn. He must Indeed be;
a monster Devil with horns and (
tail prodding and switching us to
destruction and everyman of us
crying for a tall hold.
