We see from one of our exchan
gres that in the public schools of
Switzerland “heat holidays” are
recognized by law. When the ther
moneter goes above a certain point
school is dismissed.
Spain is now trying to liberate
their prisoners in the hands of
Affuinaldo for a money considera-
tion. The United States promised
to do this but thus far has been
unable to have its own prisoners
liberated.
The narrow chasm between sue
cess and failure is bridged by ef-
forts. Many an advertised article
has been on the verge of success
only to be dropped at the moment
when by a little hustling it could
have been made profitable to the
exploiter.
This country will raise 635000-
000 bushels of wheat this year and
all other crops in proportion. We
can feed and clothe the world tor a
good two years to come if not an
other blessed seed is sprouted in the
ground. Can any other govern
ment under the sun do as much?
We think not.
Otis is still driving the Pbilipinos
from rice fields to bramble patch
and from bramble patch to some in-
significant gulley called river —this
is from the censored dispatches but
we notice that our army has never
advanced out of hearing of the
matin bells at Manila. Otis Is a
back number. He should be invit
ed to visit Hobart and get his cue.
It is given out in Kentucky that
Congressman Berry said; “If Bry-
an comes to this state to speak for
Goelbel he stand >a chance to get
shot.” If Berry said it he has a
poor opinion of the people living in
his state branding them as a lot of
assassins who will not tolerate men
who differ with them on political
questions.
If the leaders of the democratic
party think the rank and file of the
party are going to stand by and see
Bryan side-tracked for the presi
dential nomination they are woe
fully fooled. He is the logical can-
didate and can be elected if any
democrat can. He is the man of
the hour and we must stick to him.
Admiral George Dewey has at
last made up his mind when he will
sit his foot back on American soil at
New York to receive the plaudits
of a proud and greatful people. He
cables the committee of reception
from Leghorn as follows; "To
General Butterfield New York.
Yours of Aug. 1 received. Will
reach the lower bay without fall on
Friday Sept 6. Ready for parade
Saturday morning."

I Richard Croker says he will sup I
port Bryan if be is sominated and I
he is not offering any objection to|
hie being the standard bearer of the I
party in 1900. It looks now that I
Bryan will be given a second chance i
in the race in the presidential derby ;
That he will win goes without say
ing for the Republicans have made
a botch of the war with Spain and
has loaded the country down with
taxes scandals and is fostering up
lon the people an army of trust by-
concentrating capital in corneiing
ad manufactured articles into one
huge depot for purposes of making
prices and maintaining them thus
cutting off competition.
The Detroit Free Press quotes
the following Dakota matrimonial
advertisement; “Lovers Take No-
tice. —On and after this date 1 will
present an elegant chromo a par-
lor lamp or a glass water set to all
bridal couples married by me. Ail
marrying done in the most article
way either in private or public.
Runaway couples married at any
hour of the day or night and pur-
suers thrown off the scent. Reduc-
ed rates to those I have married be-
fore. A red lantern hangs in front
of my door on Prairie street at
night. No dog kept. Night bell
directly under the lantern.
Those French officers all stick to
to their former evidence and are
firm in their conviction that Drey-
fus is guilty of giving away army
secrets to the Germany government.
They are either honest in their be-
lief or the biggest pack of unhung
ruffians that are allowed to live.
The Bible tells us “not to judge”
that we may “be judge” and we
suppose the writer was inspired
when he wrote the above if he was
not he did not forsee to what ends
men would goto doffheir fellowmen
or else he would have shaped the
sentence different. It has now re-
solved itself to the point to keep
your eyes open on the men in power
for they scrupple at no mean thing
to further their ends.
Religion Losing Ground.
The country is becoming egitated
over religion. Periodically some
one rises and declares that it is de-
caying. This results in countless
discussions until the agitation runs
its course and still religion flour-
ishes. ft always will for it is some-
thing the world needs. One of the
finest recommendations of Hostet-
ter’s Stomach Bitters the great
American stomach strengthened
lies in the fact that It has lived for
fifty year’s in spite of hundreds of
imitations and is renowned for its
cure of constipation dyspepsia bil-
iousness fever and ague malaria
and sees to it that the life-giving
elements of the food are assimila-
ted with the blood. There is noth-
ing “just as good.” See that a
private revenue stamp covers the
neck of the bottle.

A Bad Man
’ The officer from Thornton ar-
• rived here on Friday night for the
[ purpose of taking back Charlie
I Morgan whom Marshal Casey aud
I Constable Rochelle arrested as he
| stepped off a Cotton Belt train
’ here. The officer said Morgan had
I proved a thorn in the side of his
county as he was a professional at
1 lifting small things that belonged to
other people. He had a penchant
i for stealing pistols knives razors
and small things he could hide in
his pocket. The officer said he had
Morgan under arrest and was taking
hiin to jail when he gave him the
slip and mounting a horse was
soon lost to view. He was right af-
ter him in fact he said Morgan
abandoned his horse at Thornton
and jumped a passenger train just
as he rode in town. He telegraphed
the conductor to keep an eye on him
and have him arrested if he at-
tempted to leave the train. The
conductor telegraphed to Lewis-
ville for an officer but none met
him there and it was not until he
arrived here that he could get ser
vice on the runaway.

Has Reached DeQueen.
A few days K ago a Bee reporter
heard a noted lawyer one who lives
several counties from us say that
Sevier county naturally was the
' banner county of Arkansas and he
i said that he was satisfied that the
outside world would see sometime.
■ —DeQueen Bee.
AVe bet a ginger snap that this
same lawyer has been over those
several counties spoken of by the
Bee as being removed from De-
Queen and made the same compli-
mentary remark regarding their
future greatness. He is a candid-
ate for some office and the only
strange thing about it is he did not
tip the Bee man sufficiently strong
to get his name used in the above
article. We are on to the politi-
cian his ways may be dark and his
tricks cute but we can see through
him the minute he makes a crack.
We have used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy in our home for
many years and bear cheerful tes-
timony to its value as a medicine
which should be in every family. In
coughs and colds we have found it
to be efficacious and in croup .and
whooping cough in children we deem
it indispensible.—ll. I‘. Ritter 4127

Attend From Texarkana.
Houston East and West Texas
officials of this city received a letter
from Texarkana yesterday which
stated that Texarkanians to the
number of 25(1 would arrive in
Shreveport Saturday morning over
the Pee Gee to take advantage of
the extremely low excursion rates
Galveston over the Houston East
and West Texas Ry.—Shreveport
Times.
We hardly think this number left
here yesterday though the attend-
ance was good.

There is an undefmable something
in every man which adds force to
all he may say and do or detracts
from it. file Greeks called it “char-
acter." We some time speak of it
as “individuality.” It eludes exact
definition or analysis. You cannot
put it into words but It makes it
self felt. It Is as inseperable from a
man as his own shadow. Emerson
in one of his essays on character
writing of men who aie geniuses in

this or that man is fortunate is not
to be told. It lies in the man; that
is all anybody can tell you about it.

Derailed Engine and Tender. I
Friday night’s Pee Gee passenger'
train bound north had a mishap |
When near Winthrop. The train.
was crossing a trestle when the en-1
gine jumped off broke the guard
rail and was followed by the tender
and mail and express car. making
quite a jamb of the affair. The
passengers were laid out at the
scene of the wreck until a train
could came down from Mena and
take them on. An engine was sent
from this place to help clean up the
wreck. No one was hurt. There
were two hobos on the platform
next to the tender and a wonder to
saythey escaped without a scratch.
Several parties well known here
going to Baker Springs were pas-
sengers on the train and when the
news first came it was feared some
of them were either killed or hurt.
We are glad the road did not
involve itself in any law suit by ac-
cidents to its passengers.

Yesterday he went to work in
the railroad yards as a car inspec
tor and when we saw him id jump-

but the man we beheld at the depot
three days ago dressed in a Prince
Albert suit going after his bride.

TEE FIRST BABY.
Its Coming is Looked Forward to
With Both Joy and Fear and its
Safe Arrival is Hailed With
Pride and Delight by All.
The arrival of the first baby in the
household is the happiest and most im-
portant event of married life. The young
wife who is to become u mother delights
to think of the happiness in store for her
when the little one shall nestle upon her
breast and latterly she shall hear it lisp
the sweet and holy name “mother.’’
Ent her happy anticipation quickly vun-
iishes when she realizes the terrible pain
and suffering through which she must
pass while bringing the little one into
the world. An indescribable fear of the
danger attendant upon the ordeal soon
dissipates her joyfulncss.
Thousands of women have learned
by experience that there is absolutely
no necessity for the sufferings which at-
tend child-birth; they know that by
the usd of “Mother’s Friend”—a scien-
tific liniment—for a few weeks before
the trying hour expectant mothers can
ho prepare themselves for the final
hour that the pain and suffering of the
dreaded event are entirely obviated and
it is safely passed through with com-
paratively little discomfort.
All women nue interested and es-
pecially expectant mothers who for the
first time have to undergo this trial in
such a remedy; for they know the pain
and suffering to say nothing of thedun-
ger which is in store forthem. "Moth-
■ er’s Friend” is woman’s greatest bles-
sing for it takes her safely through the
| severest ordeal of her life. Every woman
should be glad to read the little book
“Before Baby is Bortf” which contains
information of great value to all. It
