THE CENTAUR COMPANY NEW YORK CITY.
A CARD.
As many of our citizens have en-
quired as to the class of show of the
Lidy Minstrels to perform here to-
night as to whether it would do to 1
carry ladies out. I deemit my duty i
to make the following statement:
After diligent inquiry as to the I
Duncan Clark Lady Minstrels I 1
find that they showed in East St i
Louis to a 200 bouse the first night
and 900 the second. At Desota t
Mo. the company showed to a pack <
ed house of men and women. At c
Poplar Bluff the troupe had a pack n
ed house and turned people way — 1
there was not a woman at this per-
formance and they had a warm t
time. At Jonesboro they had a [
picked house of men only. At New '
Port the company was favored c
with a full house of men and wo
men. At Pine Bluff the company t
was billed for two nights but re- I
mained four and the house was t
crowd d each night. They showed t
at Camdei which place I have r
failed to hear from. I received a ’
telephone message from Mackey & 1
Hogan at Pine Bluff on Tuesday
night and this firm said the troupe t
was all right money makers and t
the “hottest things he ever saw.” ’
I also talked to the manager of the t
troupe that they were all right i
money makers and the hottest
thing he ever saw. c
I talked to the manager over the 1
“phone” and he said replying to i
my queries if his show was alright ■
.for ladies —he said if there 1
were any ladies present they
could rest assured that he was mar -
aging a lady company but that
Duncan Clark has a reputation over 1
the country as having a man show
and his audience is generally made 1
up of men only.
I have stated what I know and 1
you can judge for yourself. My
contract calls for a show
and if you are not pleased don’t
blame me.
Respectfully
J. J. McConnell.

GIRLS.
A fresh innocent happy girl at-
tired in a gracefully fitting and
tastefully arranged costume and
toilet of modern fashion has a
charm for every eye.
A girl who can play the latest
favorite musical composition upon
the piano skillfully is able to en-
rapture every ear.
A girl who can ride a bicycle with
ease grace and dignity ami with-
out too much agitation and notifi-
cation of of her drapery presents
a spectacle that is pleasing to all
lovers of the beautiful.
A girl who has mastered all of
the foregoing accomplishments i-
prepared to display herself to the
very best advantage before the eyes
of the public at all times.
But these requirements are to
the girl just what varnish .is to a
piece of furniture. The value of
the article depends upon the prac-
tical uses to which it may be put
rather than upon the varnish
which is only put on “for the
looks.”
A girl who can make a good pie
but who has never learned the mys-
teries of a fashionable toilet is
worth just five girls who know how
to dress but who can’t make a good
pie.
A girl who can make a good loaf
of bread but who doesn't know a
piano from a two-horse cultivator
is worth just ten girls who can pla
anything on the piano but cano
make a decent loaf of bread.
A girl who can wash and do up
a shirt as it .should be done bu>
who can no more ride a bicyci
than than she can hit Ji dog. with a
brick is worth just fifteen girls wh -
C m ride a bicycle up one side of the
rainbow and coast dowu the other
on a windy day and not reveal a
half inch of stocking but cannot
wash and db up a shirt.
This is not a lecture by a crank it
is the opinion of all people who
have opinions worth respecting.
Spread on the varnish girls; wv
all like to see it but before you be-
gin to spread be sure you haye
something worth varnishing.—

For all fresh cuts or wounds in

healing qualities are unequaled.

It isn’t necessary for a woman to give particulars. When she says Fjfl
she has “female troubles” other women know what that means. It Wjl
means days and nights of endless suffering. It means headaches which Ism
no tongue can describe. It means that terrible bearing and dragging
down in the lower abdomen. It means agonizing backache and shoulder ||Sj|
ache and arm ache and aches in the lower limbs. It means nerves on
edge—the blues— despondency and loss of hope. It means debilitating saw
drains that the doctors call leucorrhoea. It means martyrdom—some- IWN
