At last the government is to pay
for the rotten beef sent over to
Cuba which at the time was con-
demned. Aay old corporation with
money and a pull can rob the gov-
ernment.
Hear the Helena World goldbug
democrat: Congress passed the
gold bill in broad open daylight by
a vote of 190 to 130. Congress did
well. “The crime of ’73” is thus
avenged.
M. J. Meagher an elephant train-
er with Sells Brothers’ circus was
killed at Sellsville Ohio by the ele-
phant known as Sid. He gored the
elephant with his prod and the ani-
mal turned on him throwing him
down and then thrust a tusk
through the body of the man.
War in the Philippines is no near-
er an end than weeks ago. The less
of Gen. Lawton is the latest and
severest yet had. Far better to
have given the islands away than
to lose such patriots. Question
arises when will the President stop
the war? As our soldiers started
the war should also stop it.
Just as we predicted every gold-
bug democratic editor (socalled) in
the country is at work casting
slurs at Bryan because of the ap-
pointment of Allen of Nebraska to
the Senatorship. Allen is a good
man and his appointment was
timely in view of the fact that the
state is fusion and he is in line with
the democracy.
The real meaning of “Christmas
present” has been lost in all too
many cases; we give from other mo-
tives than the right one; we give
here from obligation; we give there
because others have give to us; we
give to fit the conditions of those
upon whom we bestow and fre-
quently go beyond our means; we
give where the heart does not go
with the offering.—Edward Bok.
The administration has thrown
down the gauntlet in the matter of
trust legislation declaring through
its mouthpiece on the floor of the
house that the majority does not
propose to permit any change. The
democratic leaders should not for a
moment delay to accept the chal-
lenge. Senator Morgan has made
a good start in the senate. Now
let us see what Mr. Richardson and
his associates can find to say at the
other end of the capitol. —Wash-
ington Times.
Senator Morgan Is reported to
have had with Mr. McKinley a re-
cent conversatio.i in which he said:
“Mr. President I was in favor of
the war with Spain and I could not
attack you on that score. lam an
expansionist and have no quarrel
with you on that issue. Jam also
not opposed to sound money .” This
frank admission seems to have stun-
ned the President but after a while
he recovered ami inquired: “Well
Senator what did you find to talk
about in your campaignb” “Ohl 1
replied the senator “I gave the
carpetbaggers—l”
According to the Ft Smith Times
that city has a population of 25.0001
as calculated by the city direc-
tory just gotten out there. Over a
year ago Texarkana had twenty
thousand according to the direc-
tory then issued. As Ft. Smith
claims an increase of 4000 in the
past year we can with as much
propriety claim the same which
would make our city equal in popu-
lation to that. Directories do not
always show up the population cor
rectly. If Ft. Smith or Texarkana
can show up with a population of
2000 next summer when the census
is taken they will do well.
It transpires that the financial
panic in Wall street on Monday the
ißth inst. was caused by a fight
between gigantic trust companies
The Rockefellers brought it on in a
fight against Anthony N. Brady
Whitney and others. For a year
the contest has been waged. Dur-
ing this time the Rockefeller gang
used the following means to crush
their rivals in the gas trust: A ruin-
ous gas rate war; bear crusade
against all Brady stocks; enlist-
ment of James R. Keene as bear
leader; bold manipulation of the
money market; use of National
City and Hanover banks to effect
an artificial money stringency; jug-
gling of foreign exchange through
Standard Oil financial agencies.
With the assistance of the two big
banks controlled by the Rockefel-
lers and the bear operator Keene
the panic was precipitated. It is
said that Brady Whitney et. al.
“threw up the sponge” and the
Rockefeller gang will hereafter con-
trol the puce of gas in the great
cities of the east and north. In
this panic they made a crime was
committed which should be punish-
ed. All this shows the urgent need
of a larger money volume. When
a few men with a few hundred mil-
lions of dollars can very nearly wreck
the finances of our country it is
time to call a halt on goldbugism
and contraction.
Down in that bottomless gulf of
sorrow and crime sink thousands
of men every year the victims of
drink. The fearful consequences of
this awful curse appall the mind.
Think of all the wrecks down the
pathway of life; of the men of
genius it has rendered worthless; of
the suicides the insanity it has
caused. Think of the little starving
children who beseech their weeping
and despairing mothers for food
they cannot give. No words can
paint the suffering brought to the
inocent by this liquid hell called
whiskev. “Man is fearfully and
wonderfully made.” Try as they
may some men cannot resist the
temptation. They cannot. Some-
where in that mysterious realm of
mind where the quenchless thirsts
the insatiable passions are born
lies the hidden unknown cause.
The tempests ot appetite the wild
storms of desire grasp the will and
hold the victim helpless in their
fiendish clutch. They cannot resist.
We should be exceedingly liberal io
our judgment of men.
Great Salt Lake Disappearing.
The Great Salt Lake is gradually
drying up. Geologists claim that it
will be entirely gone in another cen-
tury. There will be nothing but a
glistening bed of salt to mark the
site of one of the wonders of the
world. This is the way of all life
and yet we may prolong our stay on
earth if we will. No mortal is free
from the menace of sickness and
yet if the bowels are kept regular
and the blood pure by occasional
doses of Hostetter’s Stomach Bit
ters much sickness may be prevent-
ed. It cures all such diseases as
constipation indigestion dyspepsia
biliousness and inactive liver or
weak kidneys. To avoid imitations

though ne official announcement
has been made it is stated today
on good authority that a large ma-
jority of all classes of securities of
the various companies have been
deposited under the modified Kan
sas City Pittsburg and Gulf Rail-
way consolidation plan. A member
of the committee says this means
that the reorganization is practic-
ally accomplished. The time for de-
posits expired yesterday. It is said
that over 123000000 of securities
of the various companies was de-
posited by holders in Holland and
will he listed in New York probably
tomorrow when it is expected de-
finite announcement will be made
of the securities deposited. Cer-
tificates of deposit will be listed in
Philadelphia and New York.
Steps are also being taken to
foreclose the mortgage upon the
road so that it can be bsught in by
the committee and turned over to
the new company which will bear
the same or a similar name to that
which the road now bears. There
will be changes in officers but no
intimation has been given as to who
will be the president.

THE FIRST BABY.
Its Coming is Looked Forward to
With Both Joy and Fear and its
Safo Arrival is Hailed With
Pride and Delight by AU.
The arrival of the first bahy in .the
household is the happiest and most im-
portant event of married life. Theyoung
wife who is to become a mother delights
to think of the happiness in store for her
when the little one shall nestle upon her
breast and latterly she shall hear it lisp
the sweet and holy name “mother.’’
But her happy anticipation quickly van-
ishes when she realizes the terrible pain
and suffering through which she must
pass while bringing the little one into
the world. An indescribable fear of the
danger attendant upon the onleul soon
Hus her joyfulness.
Thousands of women have learned
by experience that there is absolutely
no necessity for the sufferings which at-
tend child-birth; they know that by
the use of “Mother’s Friend”—a scien-
tific liniment/—for a few weeks before
the trying hour ex|>ectuntmothers enn
so prepare themselves for the final
hour that the pain and suffering of the
dreaded event are entirely obviated and
it is safely passed through with com-
paratively little discomfort
All women aro interested and es-
pecially expectant mothers who for the
first time hnve to undergo this trial in
such u remedy; for they know the rmin
and suffering to say nothing of the (lun-
ger which is in store for them. “Moth-
er’s Friend” is woman’s greatest bles-
sing for it takes her safely through thf
severest ordenl of her life. Every woman
should bo glad to rend the little book
“Before Baby in Born” which contains
.information of great value to all. It
