Mr. Burnt) one of our railroad
callers in the service of the In u

riance an Sunday night. He w s
passing along a string- of cars in the
Iron Mountain yards and noticing a
car door opened fill d with goods
demanded to know who was in
there. He had hardly gotten th*
words out of bis mouth or had
time to cock his pistol which w.i
in his baud (Mr. Bumb only has
one hand) befare a big negro
sprang- out of the door on him and
wrenched the pistol from his hand
taking it away with him in his
flight. Mr. Bumb says that five
cars were broken into on Christinas
night but he could not say wheth
er much had been taken out or not
as the cars had not been checked

that on Saturday near Queen City
that Mr. Bob Cautkorn the father

off the track by a freight train and
killed. He was enroute to a friend

We are proud of the fact that
Texarkana so far has had no serious
fights or any killing this Christmas
and let us hope that the week will
end without any thing of the kind.
The day for disorder and lawless-
ness is past in our city. No city
in America can show up better
than Texarkana in the proper ob-
servance of law and good order.
Mr. P. S. Tilson Professor of

family. The Professor told us the
school is growing more and more
important as the years roll away.
There is not enough room there
now for all who hare applied.
The clever birbers in Lowry &

generosity is most highly appre-

As a cure for rheumatism Cham-
berlain’s Pain Balm is gaining a
wide reputation. D. B. Johnston
of Richmond Ind. has been troubled
with that ailment since 1862 In
speaking of it he says: “I never
found anything that would relieve
me until 1 used Chamberlain’s Pain
Balm. It acts like magic with me.
My foot was swollen and pained me
very much but one good application
of Pain Balm relieved me.” For

TH? GEORTP SCHOOL CASE
A recent Washington dispatch
says: Thr school case from Rich-
mond county G 1. was decided to-
day in the supreme court Justice
Harlan sustaining the action of th*-
sch ><»l boird. The facts are these:
The school board in 1897 for econ
omic reasons as alleged temporar-
ily suspended the co'or* d hich
school in Augusta atended y about
60 pupils inorder they said th.it
the funds thus saved might be di-
verted to the education <>t 300 chil-
dren in the primary grades. There
upon the parents of some of the
negro children thus deprived of
school privileges brought suit to
restrain the collector of taxes from
collecting so much of the tax as re-
lated to the colored high schools
and to restrain the board of educa-
tion from using any of said funds
for the maintenance of the white
schools. The states’ court denied
the prayer of the petitioners and
they came to the supreme court
alleging that the action of the
school board and the judgment of
the supreme court were in violation
of the fourteenth amendment of
the constitution. The supreme
court sustained the decree of the
Georgia court. The action of the
school board Justice Harlan said
the supreme court was not permit-
ted from the record to assume was
based upon opposition to coloud
colored schools or the colored race.
It was taken for financial reasons
and was within the just discretion
of the board.
The case was argued for the col-
ored petitioners by ex-Senator Ed-
munds.
