as subject to the action of the people.
Yes there is room for a big cot-
ton mill in Texarkana—two or three
of them for that matter. Let us
go to work and tee if this enterpris-
ing city can have cotton factories.
Many people are starving in Porto
Rico yet the Republicans want to
tax them just the same in order to
protect the sugar and tobacco
trust. If we don’t get this govern-
ment out of the hands of the gang
now in power we had as well give it
over to the trusts.
The Nashville News and Hope Ga-
zette are two of the best printed
and newsiest country papers in the
state. We congratulate our friends
the editors of these papers upon
their success in having such papers;
people of Nashville and Hope should
give them a liberal patronage.
McKinley has sent a naval force
to Chinese waters to bluff Russia in
the interest of England France
having declared that it w< u d hands
off in the South African trouble.
The President! we think has too
much power with our navy when he
can dispatch it to where it is liable
to get this country into a war with
a friendly nation.
Maud S one of the noblest ani-
mals that ever went over the race
course is dead. She was truly a
queen among domestic animals by
virtue of superiority in all that was
useful and beautiful of which her
kind was capable. Maud S had
reached the advanced age of twen
ty-six years and she deserved her
great fame.
That round bale cotton trust is
still doing business at the same old
stand with headquarters at Wash-
ington D. C. What are the Demo-
crats going to do about It at the
coming election. We must elect men
to the legislature to legislate
against the trust and not own stock
in them. Seel

Up in lowa Thursday the repub-
lican state legislature passed the
following sensible resolution: “That
the people of lowa are unalterably
opposed to the Puerto Rico bill
passed by the lower house of Con-
gress.” It is high time that this
republican congress listened to the
voice of the people as to Porto Rico.
||The Hot Springs News announces
that Hon. E. W. Rector of that
city may run for Governor against
Dayis. As far as we are concerned
we have little choice between the
two as there is little difference.
However it will be a diversion and
Rector may improve and down
Davis which would be a little con-
solation.
Collis P. Huntington the South-
ern Pacific Railway magnate in a
speech at Galveston the other day
strongly opposed the building of the
Nicaraguan canal. Why certainly
—it might take away some of his
railway traffic and thus injure his
investment.’ Another case of Jbe
wrong ox being gored. But the
people want and are going to have
an Isthmian canal dug.
It is certainly remarkable how
easily country papers are fooled in-
to accepting ads from foreign ad-
vertisers at ruinously low rates.
These advertisers tangle up and
complicate their advertising propo-
sitions until it is next to impossible
to make a correct estimate of same
—for instance this paper received a
proposition from Scott & Browne of
New York proposing to insert 287
inches of Scott’s Emulsion adv. .in
our weekly during a period of one
year same to have position at bot-
tom of column preceded by and
next to pure reading matter —muni-
ficent sum of (almost nothing) was
offered for same. Dividing the to-
tal number of inches to be run by
the number of issues of the weekly
we find that this concern wanted a
little over five inches space every
week for one year for the small
sum stated. Besides they had a
lot of ifs and hard conditions in
contract. Os course we begged to
be excused and wrote them a can-
did criticism as to their ridiculous
offer. If the newspaper men will
stand up for their rights better
rates can be secured. It is a fact
that we get as good rates from our
foreign advertisers and in some in
stances better than from home con-
cerns—and we only take those who
are unqualifiedly gilt-edged.
WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.
The recent wonderful accomplish-
ments in wireless telegraphy bring
to mind forcibly the value of elec-
tricity. It is probable that much
work will be saved by means of this
subtle fluid. There is no limit to its
possibilities. Applied to material
objects it causes them to move as
with life while without it the hu-
man body cannot be strong and
healthy. 'The best means of filling
the body with vitality is by the us.e
of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters.
Lack of life in the stomach causes
indigestion dyspepsia constipation
biliousness and' malaria. Any of
these symptoms means the Bitters
is needed at once. Just now when
the seasons are so variable it is
particularly valuable and a regular
dose will keep the bowels active and
healthy.

A Withdrawal Week.
Last week the candidates had a
withdrawal revival in the state and 1
the following found their way to 1
the mourners’bench: Judge Wood 1
of Het Springs was the first to
make the break for the bench as
the voters sang that good old song
“This is the way I long have sought 1
and mourn—new because I found it
nit." After Wood came Hon. W.
L. Terry who wiped a weeping eye.
Then came Bryant of Ft. Smith 1
and then our old Honest John
Fietcher caught the inspiration and
tumbled off the roost and made a
bee line for the nearest printing
office shouting to the editor to
save him as he was encompassed
with the devil. Colonel Fletcher
had barely left the editor before
Governor Dan Jones stepped in and
arranged with the newspaper jnan
to pull Berry off. The meeting is
still going on and it is confidently
expected to get Vandeventer to the
bench before many more back dis-
tricts are heard from . After Van
deventer there is other material
left for the revival to work on—we
refer to those state candidates who
announce in a Little Rock paper
and never show their mugs out of
their home place.
Mrs. C. E. VanDeusen of Kil
bourn Wis was afflicted with
stomach trouble and constipation
for a long time. She says: “1 have
tried many preparations but none
have done'me the good that Cham-
berlain’s Stomach and Liver Tab-
lets have.” These Tablets are for
sale at Smith’s drug store. Price
25 cents. Samples free.
As stated in our last issue we pro-
pose to support Hon. Thos. C. Me
Rae for Congress. It is clear to
our mind that he and his friends
will have to get up and hustle in
this campaign or else his opponent
Mr. B. M. Foreman of this city
may win as the latter is a fine bus-
iness man very popular well ac-
quainted over the district and a
very astute politician. Then it is
possible that a big slice of the Na
tional Republican campaign fund
may be placed at his disposal—if so
and “workers" are engaged in every
county it would not be so hard for
him to win. It is a fact that the
district is about evenly divided
politically there being nearly as
many republicans as there are dem-
ocrats. Right at the outset this
paper insists upon democrats look-
ing carefully into the facts and
then act for the best —we. cannot
afford to be apathetic as in the
past or else the district will go re-
publican.
Nervous weakness or palpitation
of the heart indicates disorder in
the stomach and digestion. Prickly
Ash Bitters is a wonderful remedy
in such cases. It cleanses strength-
ens and regulates the stomach liv-
er and bowels removes the cause of
the heart symptoms and builds up
a strong and vigorous body. Sold
by all druggists. 3 15
Congressman Mcßae rallied the
Democratic forces in the House and
fought for free trade with Porto
Rico. Mcßae it was who went to
the House although a very sick
man to protest against dallying
with the Brigham Roberts case.
Mcßae is always heard from in an
emergency involving the rights and
the sentiments of the people of
Arkansas. Arkansas has cause to
be proud of Tom Mcßae who does
more committee-room work than
any man in the Arkansas delega-
tion and then finds time to lift his
voice in defense of the principles of
Democratic government.—Helena
