County Extension Agent
The Mills County Crops and
Livestock Committee is presently
involved in an effort to secure
sufficient contributions to purchase
equipment to be used in testing
forages in our county. This may
sound strange considering the
present production situation but
hopefully, the production scheme
will change and things will return
to normal. An additional advantage
of having such equipment in our
county now is that samples for
crude protein could be tested on
hay that is being purchased by
most livestock producers at the
present time.
Several alternatives for equip-
ment have been investigated and it
appears that the equipment
necessary for this type of service
will cost approximately $4300.00.
Initial contacts with a number of
local businesses and individuals
have confirmed commitments of
approximately $2500.00; each busi-
ness and/or individual pledging
$100.00 toward the cost of the

equipment. This means that we
still need 18 additional pledges
from individuals and producers to
secure the remaining $1800.00.
If you would like to participate
in this effort with a contribution of
$100.00 or more, please contact the
County Extension Agent’s Office
and leave your name and address.
The benefits of such equipment
in our county are numerous. Crude
protein samples on forages either
in the field or in the bale can be
tested in much less time than is
required to send samples to distant
labs, samples of native range
forages can be tested for local
ranchers to name only two.
Charges for samples run in a
local lab would be set as low as
possible to maintain the equipment
and to replace necessary materials
and chemicals used in the
sampling process. This effort
would be conducted as a service to
local producers and not as a profit
enterprise. The Mills County Crops
and Livestock Committee will be
charged with responsibility for
auditing expenses, setting rates
and other particulars of the
objectives.
No money has, as yet, been
collected. Only commitments from
interested businesses and in-
dividuals. If sufficient additional
commitments can be secured, the
effort will continue and hopefully
within a few months we can have
the lab equipment in operation. If
you have not been contacted and if
you are willing to support the
effort with your contribution,
please call the County Extension
Office at 648-2650 as soon as
possible. Remember, we must have
at least 43 commitments of $100.00
to purchase the equipment.
If you would like to discuss the
matter before making a decision as
to your individual participation,
please feel free to contact our
office.
