The dedication of the Liberty
Tree, a live oak, was held January
30th on the north lawn of the
capitol building in Austin. Mrs.
Robert McCoy, Goldthwaite, Dir-
ector of District V, Texas Garden
Clubs, gave the dedicatory
address. The planting of Liberty
Trees all over the nation is being
sponsored by the National Council
,of Garden Clubs, as well as Texas
Garden Clubs, Inc.
The first families to move to the
present area of Mills County with
the intention of establishing a
home were the Davis Morris, Sr.
and William Jenkins families who
settled on Bennett Creek, one mile
south of the present town of
Center City, in 1854. It would be
thirty-three years before Mills
County was formed.

A look back through the
files of the Goldth waite Eagle.
January 26, 1951.
Editorial ."... The air is full
of alarms. There is talk that the
Red Russinas are about to split us
off from our friends in Europe, in
Asia, in Africa. As the Eagle went
to press this week, total casualties
numbered 46,000 - dead, wounded
and missing. The Reds are trying
to trade the blood of our dead in
Korea in hope of gaining their
own ends. We are surrounded by
"appeasers". We believe that the
issue, in the end, will have to be
decided upon the fields of battle.
But we believe also that no man
ought to condemn any other for
trying to test the possibilities of
negotiations to its last dregs.
Fight, we must, but the record
must be clear ..."
