House Landscaping
One hundred years ago on this
day the talk of the town and
county was not about school
or the new football teams or even
about the Dallas Cowboys winning
a game. The talk in the saloons
and on the sidewalks (board) was
about the new courthouse under
construction. It was to be a
, beautiful rock structure of two
stories, a center-of-town and
center-of-county attraction with
water tanks and hitching rails on
the northeast and northwest
corners. Some of the water pipes,
thin from rust, laid probably at the
same time, have been unearthed
this week by the city after a leak
was discovered. And many of the
huge rocks used in the structure
have been uncovered.
1 Today, a hundred years later,
the stones from the old building
are being cemented together to
form a pedestal for the old
cornerstone from the original
building which lasted until 1911
when a tragic fire gutted it.
Names on the old cornerstone
include County Judge J. P.
Grundy; Commissioners Matthew
Roach, A. V. Patterson, G. H.
Dalton, and- S. L. Cooke; County
€ Clerk, M. C. Humphries; Sheriff
G. W. Cunningham; Architect
Oscar Ruffine; and Builder John
Cormack.
The builder of the display
structure is Johnny Miller of the
Miller Masonry Company. The
project is being sponsored by the
Mills County Historical Society
under the leadership of Mrs.
Caroline Schwartz and the Mills
County Commissioners.
j The work of building walks and
* continuing the landscaping of the
courthouse plaza is also being done
by Miller Masonry under the
direction of the Goldthwaite
Garden Club and the Mills County
Commissioners. The landscape
program cannot be completed this
year without the help of some
gifts, memorials, or donations.
Many years ago the Goldthwaite
Garden Club started the plans for
beautifying it’s central plaza. It
‘ > was in 1968 that a blueprint by
Architect Hal Stringer of Waco
was adopted and work was begun.
Far-sighted members, Mrs. John
Berry, Mrs. Roy Wilkins, Mrs.
Malcolm Jernigan, Mrs. Jim
Weatherby, Mrs. Jack Elms,
Misses Ruth and Abbie Irvin, and
many, many others, sponsored
bake sales, rummage sales, silver
teas, talent programs, etc., to raise
funds and began the actual
construction. Twenty years later in
1 1988 another phase is being done.
Would it not be wonderful if the
project could be completed this
year! One friend and former citizen
of our county, to show appreciation
for her family heritage, has given
a substantial gift in memory of her
family. A plaque will hang in the
halls of the building to testify to
the family’s contribution to making
Mills County the great place that it
is.
* Would this not be a good way to
‘ honor our family heritage and to
preserve the family name? Those
of us who have roots in Mills
County extending back to the
beginning of the county might
want to consider such a memorial.
It would be greatly appreciated
and the work could continue.
The Goldthwaite Garden Club is
continuing its project of land-
, scaping the Mills County Court-
house. Sidewalk construction on
} the North side of the building is
being done by Miller Masonry
Company. Landscaping of this area
will continue as funds are
available.
Research has shown that the
Garden Club was instrumental in
the landscaping of the courthouse
many years ago. Miss Ruth Irvin,
long-time member of the club once
told of many fund raising events
including the usual: bake sales,
and the unusual: the selling of
wool sacks.
In recent years the main fund
raising project of the Garden Club
was the annual Christmas Tour of
Homes. The club will welcome any
donations and memorials from
citizens of Mills County and others
interested in adding to the beauty
of our historical building. Mrs.
Delton Barnett, Rt. 2, Box 41A, is
the chairman of the project.
Donations may be sent to her or
to Judge Wallace Johnson, Box
483, Goldthwaite, Texas 76844.

Eagles Match Mountaineers In
Scrimmage; Season Opens Friday
Cornerstone Resurrected
A limestone stand has been erected to exhibit the original Mills County Courthouse cornerstone. The
work on the project has been done by Miller Masonry of Goldthwaite. Shown above with the cornerstone
are left to right, Johnny Miller, Alphonso Coronado and Louis Coronado. The men are also pouring a lot
of cement sidewalks on the north side of the courthouse. The work is under the direction of the
Goldthwaite Garden Club and is a part of the Courthouse Plaza Project that has been in the works for
several years.

Goldthwaite’s Black and Gold
Eagles had their second controlled
scrimmage last Friday night
. against the Santa Anna Moun-
| taineers, and although the touch-
? down count was tied at one each,
[ the Eagles still showed improve-
ment.
“The scrimmage was a little
shorter due to the number of
Santa Anna players. On the first
20 plays of the series, we gave up
only two first downs defensively
while the offense was able to move
the ball effectively, but came up
I with their only score on a 50 yard
1 pass from quarterback Kyle Henry
1 to flanker Coby Tyson. The Eagles
I had one touchdown called back and
fumbled on one other possession
deep in Mountaineer territory. This
is one of those areas we hope to
learn from and improve upon,”
Eagles Coach Gary Proffitt said.
The second series consisted of
15 plays with Santa Anna gaining
their lone score on two pass plays
that covered 70 yards.
“Even with this score, the
Eagles defense continued to
improve and become more solid.
Offensively, we moved the ball
once again and came up short on
the one foot line. We were
encouraged by the fact that with
only two plays left, we didn’t give
up, and moved the ball within the
SA 35 yard line to end the
scrimmage,” Proffitt said.
“We did come out of the
scrimmage without any major
injuries. Travis Shelton did not
participate in the Santa Anna
scrimmage due to a back injury,
but he should be back this week.
Shaun Parrish did a good job
defensively filling in the linebacker
position for Travis. Our backs
continued their good hard running,
and our line also continued to do
an excellent job of opening holes,”
the coach added.
1988 SEASON OPENER:
EAGLES VS. DE LEON
The Eagles have their hands full
this week as they host the DeLeon
Bearcats, who are ranked Sth in
the Texas Associated Press poll in
Class AA. The Bearcats start 10
seniors on an offensive unit led by
all state quarterback candidate
Brent West. Defensively, the Cats
start six seniors and sport multiple
defenses. The Bearcats operate out
of the Veer and wishbone set and
throw about 40 percent of the
time.
“We are excited about the
challenge we have this week and
we’re certainly looking forward to
this game,” Proffitt said.
Kickoff time is 8:00 p.m. at
Eagle Field Friday.
JV FOOTBALL REPORT
The Junior Varsity Football team
defeated Santa Anna 1-0 in a
scrimmage last Friday night,
August 26.
The offense started out slowly
but was able to move the ball and
score on its second possession. The
lone score came on a 20 yard pass
from Eric Edsall to Brent
McCasland. Both the offense and
defense played well but must
improve to compete with a very
strong De Leon Junior Varsity
team.
TRAVEL TO DE LEON
The Junior Varisty Eagles travel
to De Leon this Thursday,
September 1 (today) for an
encounter with the Bearcats. Play
is to begin at 6:30 p.m.
