Funeral Conducted Here March 11 For Lela Harris
Lela Yeager Harris, 76, of
Goldthwaite, passed away Friday,
March 10, 1989 at the Great
Southwest Convalescent Center in
Grand Prairie, Texas.
She was born January 19, 1913
at. Caradan, Texas. Her parents
were Thomas Abner Yeager and
Saphronia Elizabeth Phelps.
Survivors include one son, Joe
Harris of Grand Prairie; three
grandchildren, Joseph Jr., Craig,
and Kimberly; one great grand-
daughter, Tara Harris of Denton;
one brother, Bill Yeager of
Goldthwaite; and two sisters, Ruby
Kemp of Goldthwaite and Myrtle
Hodges of Waco.
The funeral was held Saturday,
March 11, 1989 at 2:00 P.M. from
the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home
Chapel in Goldthwaite. Roland Fry,
minister of the Goldthwaite Church
of Christ and Rev. Doug Holtzclaw,
pastor of the First Baptist Church
in Goldthwaite officiated at the
service. Burial was in the Pecan
Wells Cemetery, Mills County,
Texas.
Pallbearers were Derrell Yeager,
Garland Yeager, Delbert Hardery,
Edward Sanders, Robert Hunt, and
Arnold Roberts.
Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home was
in charge of arrangements.

Major Glendon L. Armstrong
, was recently named to command
the newly-activated Detachment 15,
Central ’ Air Rescue Center at
Goodfellow AFB, Texas. Major
Armstrong is the son of Mrs.
Annie Armstrong of Goldthwaite.
Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Wilcox are
proud parents of a daughter,
Patricia Joyce, born March 16.

L. G. Collier, owner and
operator of Collier Grocery for the
past several years, has traded his
grocery and market fixtures and
his home for a farm in Oklahoma.

for the three council posts to be
filled in the city election April 7, it
was announced this week by Glynn
Collier, city secretary. F. D.
Reynolds and S. A. Edington have
announced for re-election for the
regular two year term of office. V.
A. Hudson has announced as a
candidate for the one year
un-expired term.
GHS School Trustees on the
ballot include Lee Tabor, J. D.
McKenzie, Delmer Don Geeslin,
and Tommy Karnes.
David J. Williams, high school
principal and Max Blansit, coach,
were the guest speakers at the
Lions Club meeting last week.
Williams spoke on educational
needs and Blansit spoke on extra
benefits from athletics. The
program was in observance of
Public Schools Week.

March 11, 1949.
With the Rev. A. H. Muehibrad
in charge at the church and Mills
County ex-soldiers at the graveside
double reburial services were held
at Zion Lutheran Church at Priddy
Tuesday afternoon of this week for
two Priddy cousins who made the
supreme sacrifice in World War II.
They are, Anton C. Hohertz, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Ewald A.
Hohertz, who died of wounds on
Okinawa on May 27, 1945, and
Edward C. Rost, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Rost, who was killed in
action in Italy on April 17, 1945.

March 9, 1934.
0. H. Yarborough has purchased
the Rountree residence on Fifth
Street at Reynolds and will occupy
it as soon as he can be given
possission, which will be in a few
weeks.

March 12, 1904.
A barn on R. L. Burns’ farm
near Antelope Gap was burned
Tuesday morning at an early hour
and all contents were a total loss.
The barn was used by J. S.
Brannon, who is a tenant on Mr.
Burns’ farm. It contained 100
bushels of corn belonging to Mr.
Burns and 75 bales of hay
belonging to Mr. Burns, a lot of
harness was also burned and one
of Mr. Brannon’s horses perished.
The spirit of Mr. John Evans
Sr., took its flight Monday night
and his body was laid to rest in
Odd Fellows Cemetery Tuesday
afternoon with Masonic honors.

Miss Wynona Wasserman, a
senior home economics major at
Sam Houston State College,
Huntsville, has been named to the
Dean’s List for the past semester.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. A. G. Wasserman of Mullin.
GHS seniors listed on the “A”
Honor Roll include Bonita Carlisle,
Glenda Geeslin, Jolene Kemp, and
Paul Kirkpatrick.

A group of formers and ranchers
from tills area held a meeting in
the Commissioners Courtroom,
Mills County Courthouse, last
Saturday afternoon for the purpose
of organizing a club for the control
of preditory animals.

March 10, 1944.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Doggett
have received a cablegram from
Voyd Lee Doggett, Q. M-2c, that
he is well and safe. He is in the
South Pacific.
The big weekly livestock auction
sale here conducted weekly by W.
G. Wall at Fair Park each Monday
resulted in the sale of more than
$20,000 of livestock.
First Class Sgt. Pat Rahl of the
Aleutian Islands, where he saw
service for 18 months, is here
spending his furlough with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Rahl.

W. E. Fairman bought from Dr.
Brown the two story building
formerly occupied by Brown’s Drug
Store, also the upper story of the
post office building.
W. E. Summy has resigned his
position with the Goldthwaite
National Bank and accepted a
position in the County Clerk’s
office. He is one of the most
efficient as well as popular
Star Fire Dept. Working
Hard To Achieve Goals
The 50th Mills County Youth
Fair had many winners. One of
these was Jan Broyes of Cherokee.
She received the quilt, a giant
zinnia pattern, in the drawing
sponsored by the Star Volunteer
Fire Department, Jan, a hair
stylist, is the owner of Jan’s
Boutique in San Saba. Her parents
are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Head of
Center City.
The quilt top was pieced by
Ruby Dee Miles. She donated her
workmanship and materials to the
Star Fire Department. The batting
and lining was given by Mr. and
Mrs. Elmo Watson, owners of
Watson Variety Store, Goldthwaite.
The Star Quilters organized the
project. The Star VFD wants to
recognize those firms who dis-
played the quilt. They were The
Star Restaurant, Sammie Burbank;
First National Bank, Goldthwaite;
Waddell Texaco, Ollie Waddell;
and Mills County State Bank,
Goldthwaite.
Since the first meeting on June
7, 1988 the Star VFD has
organized, acquired a fire truck, a
pumping unit, fire station, and
other equipment. At the present
time they are in the process of
acquiring another truck to be used
as a tanker. Radios that enable
communication between Star VFD
vehicles and other county fire and
emergency units are currently in
operation. «
The primary goal of this
department is the extinguishing of
grass fires, but the department
answers all calls. Fires may be
reported by contacting the fire
department number 948-3255 or by
calling the dispatcher at the Mills
County Sheriff’s Office who will +
alert the Star Department through
mobile beepers. The Star VFD was
founded to assist existing county
units by bringing fire protection
closer to the Star community.
Officers for 1989 are Rodney
Parrish, President; Sammie Har-
per, Vice-President; Karry Harper,
Secretary; Kirby Moore, Fire
Chief; Lee Owens and Edward
Sanders, Assistant Fire Chiefs. The
regular meeting which is open to
all interested citizens is the third
Wednesday night of each month
beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Fire
Station located below the Masonic
Lodge in Star.
