Senator Bill Sims Supports SB 60,
Right-To-Carry Weapons Legislation
State Senator Bill Sims (D-
Paint Rock) made his support of
Senate Bill 60, the right to carry
a concealed weapon, known
when the bill was heard by the
full Senate on March 5, 1995.
The bill passed the Senate and
has headed to the House of Rep-
resentatives for consideration.
In a letter dated March 14 to
the sponsor of Senate Bill 60,
Senator Sims stated, "I am sorry
that I am unable to be with you
in person; however, I wanted
you to be aware of my complete
support of Senate Bill 60." Sims
also commented that it is his
belief that the majority of the
constituency that he represents
supports the bill and would like
to be able to better protect their
families, their homes, and them-
selves by legally carrying and
having the added protection of a
handgun. Senator Sims' letter
was read to all Senate members
and the audience.
For those seeking a permit to
carry a handgun, eligibility cri-
teria were established; these
requirements include U. S. citi-
zenship and Texas residency and
being at least 21 years of age
with no felony convictions. An
applicant also would not be al-
lowed a license if they owe delin-
quent child support, are chemi-
cally dependent or are of un-
sound mind. The bill would also
