Comm. Court accepts Odom
resignation; names Doug Storey
to fill unexpired Sheriff’s term
Mills County Commissioners accepted the resignation of Sheriff
Darwin Odom last Friday, Dec. 1, in a special called meeting of the
court. Judge Randy Wright read the resignation letter in its
entirety.
Odom had submitted the resignation, effective December 1 to the
County Judge a week earlier. Odom, who was defeated in the
Democratic Primary election earlier this year, has accepted a
teaching position with the Tarleton State University campus at
Killeen. He will be teaching Criminal Justice.
The vote to accept the resignation was unanimous.
Next item on the special meeting agenda was the appointment of
a sheriff tax assessor-collector to fill the unexpired team which will
end on December 31st.
Judge Wright moved to appoint Doug Storey. The motion was
seconded by Commissioner James Miller and passed unanimously.
Storey was the Democratic nominee for the Sheriffs position in the
recent Nov. General Election. He defeated write-in candidate Gary
Farley in that balloting.
Storey, who was present at the session, received the oath of office
from Judge Wright for the unexpired term. Storey will be sworn in
for the regular four-year term with other county elected officials in
January.
REPORT OF REGULAR NOVEMBER MEETING
The Court met in regular semi-monthly session on Nov. 27.
First to address the session was LaQuita Hicks of Mullin, who is
treasurer of the Fox Crossing Water District. She had been paying
the bills of the district with funds that were deposited in the
district’s bank account last year, but had reservations because of
recent budget requirements of the commissioners court.
Judge Wright said that the $7,500 budgeted last year for Fox
Crossing was deposited in the bank without any prior approval of
the court. He said that this is not the prescribed way that money is
handled by the court. Bills are brought to the court for payment
and then checks are authorized to be paid by the county treasurer.
He said that it is only right that the court know where the money
is going and that copies of all bills be presented for payment.
"We support the FCWD, but we have obligations to taxpayers to
keep up with their money,” Wright said.
“Either we were not doing our job or something was done by
someone who shouldn’t have,” Wright continued. No one volun-
teered any explanation about how and when the funds were
transferred out of the county treasury.
Mrs. Hicks said she understood fully the intentions of the court.
She added that the $12,000 budgeted this next year, plus $4,436 in
unused funds left over from the previous $7,500 budget will be
handled as the court has requested.
Holidays for the coming year were unanimously approved. They
are New Year’s Day, January 15, February 19, April 13, May 28,
July 4, September 3, October 8, November 11, November 22-23 and
December 24-25.
An amendment was forthcoming concerning a grant application
to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department in behalf of the Priddy
School District. A $500,000 grant is being sought to build a new
gymnasium at Priddy. The amendment concerned naming the
county judge as the representative on the grant. Priddy Superin-
tendent Ricky Davidson said the district should know in January
about the funding.
A canvass of the re-count of votes in the District Attorney
election was certified. Local voting was 1094 for Lee Haney and
1087 for Sky Sudderth. Sudderth was the overall winner for the
post which includes Brown and Mills Counties.
Report of the Mills County Emergency Medical Service was
presented. It indicated receivables of $10,741.59 for October. The
EMS had 48 responses and drove 2895 miles.
Sound system installed around
the Square in time for Christmas
City of Goldthwaite electricians, Ronnie Kiser (in the bucket)
and Darrell Wilkins installed a new sound system in the down-
town area last week, just in time for Christmas music and the
annual Parade of Lights. The $5,000 system was paid for by the
Goldthwaite Economic Development Corporation and was
designed by Charles Hardgrave. It was well received by the
holiday shoppers and also by the big crowd gathered for the
parade on Saturday night. Christmas music continues to be
played on a daily basis.
