Public acceptance of computer-
ized banking is growing on the
local scene, it was revealed in a
check with officials of Mills
County State Bank this past
week. Under the new and changed
system all demand accounts are
identified by number for the com-
puterized bookkeeping and the
cooperation has been very good,
according to Victor Williams,
cashier. Williams also stated that
approximately 65% of their cus-
tomers are now using personal-
ized name imprinted checks and
more are changing daily!

Talking Turkey
When it comes to turkey, Tex-
ans do the gobbling. Turkey pro-
ducers saw their sales grow nearly
30 percent in the 1990s, from
$135 million in 1990 to $175 mil-
lion in 1999. The Texas Agricul-
tural Extension Service says $ 189
million worth of turkeys will be
sold from Texas farms in 2000.
The wild birds are popular too.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department issued 69,073 tur-
key hunting stickers in 1999, and
25,188 turkeys were bagged. The
state has a long history of putting
turkeys on the run -- Cuero held
it’s first Turkey Trot in 1912, and
prize birds from across the na-
tion still race through downtown
during the city’s annual
Turkeyfest.
