TWA Planes Still Flying

been discussed earlier and higher
than either Northwest or Capital
Airlines had settled for.
Thomas Quoted
“This rate was impossible for
TWA to accept,” Thomas said.
TWA machinists, under their ex-
pired contract received wages
ranging from $1.45 an hour for
kitchen helpers to $2.61 for top
experienced mechanics. Capital’s
new contract boosted the top wage
to $2.87 immediately and will send
it to $2.95 next Oct. 1. Maximum
longevity allowances will further
raise the top wage at that time
to $3.05.
The machinists voted to end
their 37-day strike against Capital
Friday. Northwest settled with the
IAM Monday.
The union also is engaged in
contract talks with Eastern and
Northwest Airlines.
In addition the Airline Pilots
Assn. has threatened to strike
American Airlines.
HAMLIN (RNS) —An elderly
Hamlin Woman, Mrs. A. F. Dix-
son, was injured Saturday after-
noon when a car driven by her
husband collided with another
auto two miles north of here on
the Aspermont highway.
Mrs. Dixson, 70, sustained a
broken left arm and numerous
cuts and bruises as she was
thrown from the auto. She was
treated at Hamlin Memorial Hos-
pital, and then transferred by
Foster ambulance to Hendrick
KANSAS CITY (AP)—A strike
by Trans World Airlines machin-
istst left only six of the line’s 200
big planes still flying Saturday.
No meetings were scheduled be-
tween the country’s fourth largest
air line and the International
Assn. of Machinists, whose 6,700
TWA workers walked out Friday
morning in a contract dispute.
Pickets, many of them women,
were on a 24-hour schedule around
TWA installations and offices.
The only planes still in service
were those in the overseas divi-
sion. They were expected to be
grounded as soon as they reach
New York.
Offer Received
A TWA spokesman said the
company received an offer by tel-
ephone during the afternoon from
the union but rejected it “because
its demands were greater than
those upon which discussion broke-
off Friday at the beginning of the
strike."
Cliff Miller, chairman of IAM
District 142, confirmed the offer
had been made but said it was a
lesser demand than the union
made in the last meeting Friday.
He said the union’s offer was
greater than the last company of-
fer.
But Charles S. Thomas, presi-
dent of the airline, said the com-
pany “will continue to work
with the union in an effort to
reach a mutually satisfactory
agreement.”
His position was set forth in a
telegram to Gov. James T. Blair
of Missouri, who had offered the
state’s mediation machinery in an
effort to reach a settlement.
Thomas said assistance would be
sought if developments indicated
it would be desirable.
He declared the Machinists had
demanded at the last meeting a
much higher pay rate than had Needham in Tarrant County
