Cod Liver Oil for Arthritis
Scientists have confirmed the age-old belief that cod liver oil is good
for the joints. British researchers say taking the supplement could
delay or even reverse the destruction of joint cartilage and inflamma-
tory pain associated with arthritic disease, and believe it could even
delay joint replacement surgery. Professor Bruce Caterson said “we
| can slow down or remove the activities of the enzymes that degrade
I cartilage in arthritis, and as well, we can keep inflammation down to
1 . a lower level.”
1In another study, 43 patients with rheumatoid arthritis took one gram
1 of cod liver oil (one capsule) daily for 3 months. Decreases occurred
1 in morning stiffness (52.4%), painful (42.7%) and swollen (40%)
1 joints, and pain intensity (67.5%). Ratings of “good” or “very good”
were awarded by 68% of the patients for efficacy and by 95% for
' 1 tolerability. Eleven, patients reported nonsevere adverse effects that
l in 3 cases may have been related to the study preparation. The con-
1clusion: cod liver oil can be recommended for the treatment of rheu-
I matoid arthritis.
