my fingers. She isn’t afraid of
the water and even though she
got dunked unintentionally
and coughed some, she was a
good sport about it and con-
tinued to kick her legs and
splash water.
One time when the boys
were diving in she said, “How
do they do that?” Sarah will
be ‘doing that’ probably next
time I see her.

That is as far as I have learned Saturday night during the
about their summer activities thunderstorm our apple tree
but you can bet that it is came crashing down. Debra
jammed packed with one thing and Steven had come in just
or another, as the wind had picked up and
Cody will be sure to bring when they left, which was just
some of his computer games.

a few minutes later, the tree
was down. Some of us ven-
tured out under the carport to
see the fallen tree but I think
it made the biggest impression
on Sarah. She would shrug her
shoulders and say “The apple
tree is broken, now we have
to go to the store to buy
apples.”
Sunday afternoon, Stuart
and Steven took out the chain
saw and quickly cut up the tree
and Stuart hauled it off. Frank
and I were both shocked at
how fast they worked. When
they got through Frank started
the riding mower and mowed
over the twigs and leaves and
bagged them. Now all that is
left is a small hole in the
ground. We will fill it in and
let the grass grow over it.
Here is a little history about
the apple tree. Nathan
Carothers bought the ice fac-
tory and bottling works behind
LeRoy Miller’s Gas Station
right to the south of The Eagle
office. This was, of course,
before Joe Brooks bought the
property to build his store.
Anyway as Nathan was bull-
dozing the building down and
cleaning up the property Frank
grabbed one of the three or
four foot saplings which had
the roots exposed. He took it
home and planted it.
This was twenty plus years
ago as best as we can figure.
If this is correct then Bethany
would have been eleven years
old. She remembered telling
her Dad that “it won’t work!”
The tree yielded some real
good apples over the years.
