Topical Meds Improve Wound Healing
Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs), such as nifedipine and
diltiazem, are medications that are taken orally to reduce high
blood pressure and stabilize angina. In properly compounded
topical preparations, these drugs have been shown to hasten
wound healing, improve blood flow to diabetic ulcers, reduce scar
formation and successfully treat both acute and chronic anal fis-
sures. Topical therapy with CCBs is preferred over oral adminis-
tration due to the lesser incidence of side effects such as hy-
potension, flushing and headaches. Pentoxifylline is a drug that
reduces blood viscosity and thus can enhance circulation to the
wound. When added to a topical preparation, pentoxifylline may
improve the rate of wound healing by improving the ability of CCBs
to reach the wound tissue. A wide variety of compatible anti-
infectives, anesthetics, protectants, and agents that promote
wound healing can be incorporated into a single preparation for
ease of application and to improve compliance. Please ask our
professional staff for more information.
