marked. "Really? Well,
how do hot air balloons
work?" I asked Earl who is
a doctor of aerospace engi-
neering. "Well, to put it
simply, hot air rises. You
turn the burner on to heat
the air trapped inside the re-
inforced nylon balloon.
The air becomes warmer
than the outside air causing
a lift to occur. So when it’s
cold outside, you don’t
have to heat the air inside
the balloon as much to
make the balloon rise. The
balloons must be very large
in order to capture enough
hot air to lift off the ground.
A typical sport balloon
ranges in size from 65,000
to 100,000 cubic feet in
volume and stands around
70 feet tall," said Earl,
Editor’s Note: If you are
going to go to the Balloon
Fiesta, I highly suggest
bringing an aerospace engi-
neer along to help answer
the numerous questions that
will pop up.
She said:
I have had several occa-
sions which, "took my
breath away." The balloon
fiesta experience was an-
other one for the books. I
especially loved the
evening "glowdeo." The
crews inflate the balloons
and pull the burners. The
flames burst into the night
sky and the balloons ex-
ploded with a kaleidoscope
of brilliant color. It is gor-
geous! Steve was so moved
that he even stole a kiss as
we stood under the
smooching bumblebees. If
ever you have a chance to
experience the balloon fi-
esta... don’t hesitate!
